A no holds barred 'why I dont like' thread.

bike snobs... because if the owner/rider enjoys his/her bike and riding it, then who is anyone else to pass judgement on it?

examples

V's on a canti frame
- "Suss forks on a non bounce frame"... Why not if the thing handles OK?
- "Ahead on an originally threaded frame"... But they are actually better
- "Risers where there should be flatties"... Why not if the thing handles OK?
- "That part is not expensive enough/boutique/desirable".... Component masturbation ;)
- "Would look better with skinwalls".... No comment

The list goes on, but so does the to do list at work ;)

Weight weenies.

What's the point of worrying about saving 40 grams on a cassette when you're carrying about 20 lbs of excess weight around your belly/backside/moobs (delete as appropriate)?

Ano / bling on a bike - stick the chavvy tat on your watch if you like, but for bikes, less is more.

This retarded thing with wheels having fewer and fewer spokes.

Radially laced wheels.

Snowflake laced wheels.

Cantis being unfairly maligned, when most of the pics I see of them, are adjusted awfully.

Find it hard to dislike brands or makes of bikes - most I can think of have something I like in their back catalogue.

Opinions / proclamations masquerading or lauded as fact.

Manitou FS

Manitou FS

They crack and the ride is poor. Every one goes on about this bike, how pretty it is, so is my wife but she wouldn’t be much good to anyone if I rode her down the Malvern’s at 30mph. The truth is the Manitou FS is no different. People get drawn into the myth, buy one ride it and sell it and goes on how good it was’’ not how good it still is. It’s a good pavemaster as long as you don’t jump off the kerbs.

Back in the day the fs was a poser’s bike, I should know as my mate had one, sold his fantastic RTS Team for it. It was ok as he only went round the town or down by the river on it, on the back wheel most of the time. I only went on it on concrete or tarmac, as it never went off road and it bounced all the time and the worst climbing bike iv every been on. It cost about 4k in 94 with xtr and ringle on it of course, the standard trait for a Manitou , the perfect garage Queen.

Shimano

From way back to their price fixing, blackmailing days of old, this company has done more to try and kill any creativity within our hobby than any other.

Any company that has a market share of 95%? can't be good for any industry. Also the myth that only Shimano stuff works, Bollo*!! Mixing and matching components is the life blood of Retro biking, and I really resent the fact that we have lost many many small engineering companies threw Shimanos sales tactics over the years.

They also make very ugly looking parts, except maybe M900 stuff which was OK!

Does it work yes, do I want it NO!

As an aside, they also make equipment for people that like to torture and kill fish for fun.

As a club ( hammer basher ) mechanic, listening to people say there's a problem when the chain moves UP the gears ( to bigger cogs ) when they mean DOWN the gears.

People getting cogs and sprockets mixed up. ;)

Bikes like Cunningham’s and Steve Potts, they are just old boring frames that are over-hyped, they hold as much interest as an unpainted Giant frame except a Giant would ride better.

Klunkers - you can roll a turd in glitter but it is still a turd. They were crap then and they are crap now.
