98 Orange P7 - what front mech size does it REALLY need?

Nope, there’s a lug near the top so from what I recall the cable goes from there into the mech.
Been a (dare I say it) roadie for nearly 20 years and am returning to the fold, so all advice is welcome.

I'll dig out my original & new mech for my 98 P7 tomorrow but I have these pics taken when I bought it showing the original STX mech. Might give an idea.

Top pull. Top swing?

That would be much appreciated.
You struck gold with that beauty.....it looks in mint condition and that before you started!

Yes, you need a top pull mech, but still wont be able to fit a top swing. The pic above hasnt got ovalised tubing. The clamp obviously needs to go around the round section.

Someone else trying to fit a top swing to the frame here viewtopic.php?f=1&t=281673

Thanks osgm.......top pull, bottom swing high mounting one it is......of to the sales forum it is.
I’m guessing this means my P7 isn’t a 98 then.....so it must be earlier?
The cable bosses on the top tube are on the side and after 99 I think they went on top.

Not the best light to take pics last night but both mine - original STX & upgrade XT are defo 31.8 top pull, top swing. They do fit but little tighter than ones I've fitted in the past. Previously I'd only offered them up to the frame but I got the bolt in last night

I read about the ovalised tube in the catalogue above but thought it must be too subtle for my eyes but the post mkone links it looks pretty obvious. Mine's a 97 serial number but given all features it's been pegged as 98 to market but seemingly minus the oval tubing.

The bottom swing thing. Only found out about that recently. I'm also building a 2002 P7 with XTR. I bought a M953 front mech. It's a bottom swing. First I'd seen so was a school day when I did a dummy fitting. When buying I was just looking at condition & age - never noticed the swing. Thing is, to align with chainrings I think it's going to have to fit above the lowest bottle boss. I don't recall seeing any P7 set up like that. The catalogue picture in the post above doesn't show that but does mention the ovalised tubing in the spec. Confused.

Mattydoors - if yours is a M952 (I think the M953 was just bottom swing) & in good nick we could do a swap but I'm guessing your's will be earlier.

Mines an M952.....pretty much NOS. Happy to swap if yours is in good nick.
I bought a cheap XT one on ebay for 4 quid last night with a 34.9 clamp and a shim as when I moved the 952 up between the bottle bosses the clamp still seem very tight.
Let me get the XT one and see what the score is.
That said the 952 is no real use to me so can swap anyway if you fancy....pm me a pic mate.
