Most of my fleet is pre 97 but the first decent mtb I ever bought was in 1998, what I had before would be classed as BSO in a pre 97 style. I like both and as our motto states 'if its old school its in' which I define as if its not new its old school.

I've ridden quite a few bikes, but never found a cantilever brake that was at least half as powerful as a cheap V-brake with the correct set-up. If you have any suggestions on that, I'll take them gladly. Really!

They may well be more powerful, but isn't there a limit to how much power you need? I think I can lock the wheels with the brakes on most my bikes (maybe not the Industrial Peugeot, but that's due to me not having set them up well enough yet), so rather than that I'd prefer brakes which give me the best feel over maximum power.

Having said that, it could just be that my hands lack the finesse to get the best feel from lighter-pull brakes.

I don't think many people would disagree that from an ease of setup point of view V-brakes are far better than cantis or u-brakes, and for some applications that's the most important thing.

Maybe people who love cantis just have bigger forearms than the rest of us? I don't brake any harder with discs or Vs but the big advantage for me is that after a few hours in the saddle I can brake as hard at the end of a ride as I could at the start.

And having started reading a road bike again recently I'd forgotten how woeful the breaks are on them compared to a mountain bike.
