91 Marin Pine Mountain

Dirt Disciple
Hi guys. Thought I'd share my project. I picked up this 1991 Marin PM from a barn in Cumbria about 10 years ago with an idea to spruce it up and use it. Needless to say I didn't get around to it and it sat in my garage untouched and unloved until a few weeks ago when I met a guy near me riding a 90's mountain bike he'd restored so it gave me impetus to get on with the Marin.

I tried to retain the Zolotone paint and treated it with vinegar and light brushing for days on end but eventually decided I wouldn't be able to live with the rusty look so got her media blasted and powder coated. We couldn't get an exact match on the dark Zolotone or the fluorescent orange but I dont want a museum replica so was happy to go with some colours that are just about right. I'll be refurbing and using the original wheels and groupset. I'll change the saddle probably to a flite titanium and will replace the chain for a new one. Headset is done now and back on the bike with stem and bars. Canti brakes are cleaned and reinstalled but not cabled up yet. BB is sat in white spirit to remove the old grease which has turned to black tar. So next steps are to reinstall the BB, chainring and cranks. Then onto front and rear mechs and cables and finally will sort the wheels and hubs. Decals courtesy of Gil. Hope you like it!

Latest bits n pieces are headset clean, regrease and install. I forgot to take pics of it. Also same for the BB and the chainset. Middle ring has some worn teeth so I may end up replacing the whole crankset in the future.

A lot of shimano chainrings have sawed off teeth to help with shifting, not sure there's a thing wrong with those chainrings. My main thing is, look at em edge-on and make sure the teeth are aligned and go *real* easy on em till you're sure you aren't gonna get chainsuck

I kinda like shimano 110/74 cranks. Versatile, get the job done, polish up nice

Ahh thanks good intel and makes perfect sense!

image 4262 of the crank. At approx 11 o'clock there is a flat topped tooth. That is perfectly normal Shimano tooth design & not wear.

Lovely progress btw, nice colour choice.

Ahh great stuff. That puts my mind at ease. Thanks for the comments. Tried to match the original colours but this was a close as I could get. Purists wont be too happy but its not for a museum its for riding!
