9 speed / 10 speed compatabillity question

The cable pull did change in 10 speed - which is why you can't buy a 10 speed clutch mech and use it with 9 speed shifters. Which is annoying!

Re:

Just get a 10 speed rear mech.

Deore £25

XT £40

Zee £30

Saint...just silly! ;)

And thats new prices..go 2nd hand on ebay and get it for less...

I'm about to a 1x10 on my FSR can you run a narrow wide set up with out a clutch rear mech? Looking at using shimano zee shifters, mech (not are clutch'd) and xt cassette and chain

as long as the mech is a short or medium cage it will be fine. Long cage ones make the chain too long for off road riding.

What do they make them for then?
Nearly all off road rear mechs used to be long cage!

Yep you need it when running three front chain rings due to the range of gears but when running 1x10 there is too much slack in the chain due to long cage mech which will make the chain jump off on the rough stuff ;)

That'll be cos your chain is too long......... yes a short or medium is better, but you can quite easily run a long cage mech with a 1x set up.

Currently have 1x9 on one bike, with an SLX Shadow non clutch mech, long cage, and a narrow wide ring and haven't dropped a chain yet.

And that's my rough stuff bike.

Aye you can run it but offroad you will drop the chain more as the long cage mech makes the chain too long.
Only if you make the chain too long. You know, big-big plus 2 links, no mention of long or short cage in there........
