So what's the difference between one of those and an 87 Avanti (he lazily asks without trying to figure it out himself)?

look up 'Raleigh SBDU' - it gives you an idea of what was behind the people who came up with the frame. If this had been an Orange, there would be pages and pages of 'ooh looky' but as its only a knackered old Raleigh...

Anyway, theres not many who can say their frame was built by a guy called Preston Dickman.

Interesting thanks. So SBDU was a notch up from the Lightweights Unit - so I guess this would have been built by one of their very top builders.

Having said that, your catalogue page there refers to the LU. And I'm sure I've read that the 87 Avanti was GOD designed - it looks almost identical to this apart from the rear brake.

There are a few Avantis about and I've not heard of one of these before, would the frame have been custom built?

That link crashes my phone! Does it add much of relevance to the screenshot below from another thread? (which I guess answers some of my points above):

Well for what it's worth I like the Ti colures, what difference does it make once it's not original what colour came out in what year? Do what ever colours you like. The MT- 60 group scrubbed up well, looks good so must be worth trying out on your frame. Good luck with the build these old Raleighs are definitely worth some time, effort and money spending on them.

Trivia factoid: The red yellow and black Raleigh team colours were designed to still be distinctive in black and white photographs and on b&w televisions. :D

Not seen this. A SBDU built Maverick is awesome, never knew such a thing existed!!
