8 speed shifter with 7 speed bike.

Can I fit 8 speed lever with 7 speed rear mech?
Just be a click that does nothing wouldn't it?

Yes, one of my bikes is setup like that, works fine. Just make sure that the limiting screws in the rear derailleur are set up correctly so even if you click on the "empty" gear the chain won't go into the spokes/dropout.

That would be an 8 speed lever with a 7 speed cassette. Within its limits, the mech will just do whatever the lever 'tells it to', whether that's stopping at seven points or eight points. (Or was that a typing error?)

Well yes if you want to split hairs rear mech and the cassette...and I don't know that's why I asked.
Basically yes a 7 speed set up with 8 speed shifter.
Found some very nice shifters but the right hand is 8 speed.

Well, the distance between cogs isn't the same for 7 and 8 speed cassettes so you're relying on the floating jockey wheel to cope- if it can't then the gears will be slippy/noisy/generally nasty. Having said all that, I've not tried that combination, so..

I've recently been through this. Whilst it will work it's very rough to the extent that I invested in all 8 speed and cold set my (road) frame to match. Cheers Bill
