7005 aluminum frame oxidisation

I've got a GT Zaskar that was anodised ( ice red, not the nice smooth stuff :( ) that was rough. I couldn't get rid of the anodising so my mate sand blasted it and I tried to polish up (hours of wet n dry/autosol), didn't work cos I couldn't polish the welds. Anyway, I got it zinc coated then powder coated for £40, now the finish is perfect. I'd suggest light powder coat, zinc coating then powder coat.

I suspect if you have zero oxidisation on the frame the finish will be fine. You will only know this once the frame has been stripped.

Depending on the quality of the finish you want and the extent of any oxidisation based on my experience I wouldn't recommend you get them to deal with it. Instead to take a specialist before SPF apply the powder coat - though I have no idea who that would be. Based on their inability to remediate what to me looked like very trivial oxidisation I don't feel SPF are skilled in that area.

However with a single coat I think the finish would be fine. In fact another guys frame I saw at the time looked very good.

Also worth noting Ray is a very nice guy to deal with.

Hi Agent Orange.
I am really sorry to hear that you are not happy with the finish of your bike frame, as you know we did express our concerns regarding the level of oxidisation around the drop outs and gusset area of the frame and the effect it would have on the finished article.

I am sorry if I didn’t make myself clear when we spoke as my main concern was dressing the frame to the point of jeopardising the strength of those areas under constant stress as the level of oxidisation was severe.
We work hard to make sure our customers are happy so could you give me a call on 02380642632 and we will do our best to get it sorted for you.

Ray :)
