2025 Time Warp build thread

The Brahma was the first thing to get ditched from my 92 Apex. Too narrow between the controls.
Good work, the frame/paint look flawless.

Have you got grips for the Brahma bars? I've got a set of bars but I've never been sure what grips to use. I'm tempted to just go with bar tape.
I am going to try spongey touring bike style long grips first, the chances of finding original rubber ones in any kind of usable condition are slim, plus they weren't very practical not easy to apply/remove. I think the OEM position of the brifters was too close to the centre so will try with them further out than stock

A Diamond Back Axis was my first proper ATB in 88 .
I was young and had my head turned by the paintwork ,I wish someone had warned me about the U-brake :) :)

Tyres arrived today ( tyres not tires!) - managed to get the ones that have the 'plain' logo without the word 'classic' added (as I have some of the latter and they don't have the desired OEM appearance).

I took the opportunity to clean the rims up as best I can though there is fat chance of finding any replacement rim decals; I am in 2 minds whether to peel them off or leave 'em

Time for a Brahma Drama Ding Dong...

...these arrived this afternoon 500mm strips (34mm diameter, internal 21mm) ebay vendor ryanfre-32 "thick sponge foam handlebar tube" so I prepared to do battle with the brahma - having memories of wrestling similar sponge grips over touring bike drops with cable routing inside the grips.

( I ordered 2 x as much as I needed in case of mishaps) they come with plastic bar plugs, though I managed to source some much nicer metal diamond back branded bar ends anyway.

I used some soapy water in a trigger spray container to lubricate the bars , having first waxed them with some slippery car wax.

note I mounted the brifters much wider out than the OEM rubber grips allowed originally in brochure shots - those left the controls far too narrow imho and I opted for a more comfortable and wider placement for the hands - akin to a conventional flat bar. There is way more length in these tubes than I needed so they could be cut to length once i was happy with the fit...

on with the bar ends that have 2 x grub screws to hold them in place:

looks pretty neat and better than just using plastic bungs.

happy with the result - I think they look pretty funky and unusual

Need to ride the thing to get the ergonomics right but am pleased to have been able to restore the cockpit to close to what it originally looked like - I just hope it isn't too ungainly to actually handle

started on the big shine-up task - chainset and pedals first...

...some serious 'mothering' needed to shift the gouges and marks on the M730 cranks but came good with some judicious use of wet+dry.
I am keeping the SR 'low fat' pedals as these are original and also have a very nice patina + super smooth axles and bearings still - they cleaned up well with paint restorer on the black parts and mothers+wet &dry on the shiny bits. Chainrings came clean enought but are quite well worn so will keep my eyes open for some NOS replacements
The paint job on your Diamond Back looks very similar to the 1991 GT Timberline, same effect. Lovely bike!
