2004 Kona Cindercone - Drivetrain/Groupset upgrade ?

Re:

Yes, hollowtech II works with threaded cups, so you just take the old cartridge BB out, screw the new cups in and put your new chainset through. Deore chainsets come up for about 50 quid with a BB on chain reaction and the like, Alivio HTII chainsets are good and race face evolve chainsets sometimes turn up cheap on here, or eBay. I paid about 30 quid for my race face ones a few years back, and then upgraded to an SLX chainset on the cycle to work scheme. I bought about £400 worth of stuff on the scheme for my existing bike.

Interesting ! hadn't thought about doing that, I take it i need to find a lbs willing to bend the rules a bit ? Thought you had to purchase a whole bike off cycle2work ?

Re:

Apparently bike parts without a bike are ok on the halfords cycle2work scheme. As long as it's for you, I guess it's still encouraging the employee to cycle to work.

I think the OP might also benefit if he's looking to overhaul the bike. I do also think that upgrading from the factory wheels, some new rubber and a new fork would be a huge improvement. I love my retro bikes (otherwise why would I be on the forum) but rejecting all modernity out if hand isn't the way to go.

Decent wheelset recommendations ? not wanting to spend silly money.

Mavic rims (suited to the kind of riding you intend and your weight) on Shimano Deore hubs for cheap and strong; XT or Hope if you feel flush.
I'm really not taken with fancy factory wheels as they use too many proprietary parts and spares are a nightmare.

Just had a nice custom wheel built up my my LBS for £35 for a Mavic rim and Phil Wood singlespeed hub. Yum!

Re:

I ran my 97 Lava Dome with Elixier RSL brakes , Mavic XM 819 tubeless rims with hope hubs , Fox RL100's XT hollowtech BB with deore crankset , 2X with bash , and Sram X9 9 speed , worked great (I did have to make and braze my own disc tab on the frame though , you sir don't have that problem ).
