I've got a 1x10 on a 1993 Kona Hahanna my daughter rides. Running a 11-42 ZTTO cassette and a Narrow wide 32T Snail chain ring. The trasmission is a Deore shifter with an SLX clutched mech (although we haven't engaged the clutch as it makes shifting harder for her little hands). It's got enough range (just) and has not dropped a chain yet. The hardest part of the conversion was the redish of the rear wheel to suit the new freehub body (It was originally a 7's, we needed the 8-12s body to fit the cassette and you have to modify the wheel spacers to suit) which needed the skills of a wheel builder to replace spokes (several ceased) and true it all up.
I'll be replacing my boys 2x transmissions with 1x 11-46 cassettes when they wear out as it seems to suit them better, they are easier though as they are modern bikes.
