1998 rockhopper build

Ok, well I tried to fit a 11spd Shimano road cassette and it didn't fit hence why I'm trying to swap out the free hub body. I left off 1 of the rings on the 11 speed and I was able to fix the cassette to the free hub.

I have a sunrace 11-46 which I will try fit on it.

I would like to build this bike up with sensah srx pro 1 X 11 with drop bars.

The wheels are not original but definitely from the same area.
 
This might be incorrect, but from what I understood recently…

11spd MTB cassette will fit on there and work with an 11 spd MTB rear mech slx/xt/xtr etc.

11spd road cassette would not fit, you would need a different freehub - grx runs 11 road.

11spd road and MTB mechs and shifters are not cross compatible, different spacing, pull ratios etc.

I will happily edit/delete/learn as someone more knowledge comes in to correct me….

8 spd freehub is shorter.
9/10/11 compatible (on mtb) as overall width remains the same the spacings are less.
Sorry, I don’t think that’s true - 8/9/10/11 spd MTB cassettes are all comparable widths and fit on the same freehub - not true of road - 7 spd are narrower and would need a spacer on an 8spd freehub.

7spd freehubs are narrower and you couldn’t fit a 8/9/10/11 spd MTB cassette.

Road 8/9/10 all the same 11 needs different freehub.

This is all from much Google searching, cross referencing and experience on my latest 7/8 spd builds, might save someone a lot of confusion and money when you’re trying to make stuff work!

To be honest I'm not convinced it's true either LOL!

This is quite a discussion point historically & my Googling has turned up various results - ignoring my experience, I would agree with you entirely.
The guru Sheldon Brown tells me 9 on 8 should be fine - he's usually Bob on.

However, based on experience (although my head tells me it should work) I have never been able to successfully fit a 9 speed cassette on a 8 speed freehub. All fits but the lock ring won't engage the freehub body thread.

I should caveat the above with the facts that I haven't tried "that many" & there's an assumption that the 8 speed freehub is actually an 8 speed freehub & not a 7 speed in disguise.

I have what I believe to be an 8 speed Big S in the man cave at the moment. I might have a play & a measure up later.

Iirc at the crossover one freehub is 4mm shorter than the other, which is why it doesn't work.
The question is.... is that between 7 & 8 or 8 & 9?

Again my head says between 7&8 as that's about when rear spacing changed...... maybe....

haha. 7&8 I had to buy a spacer for to fit a 7spd cassette on a newer 8spd freehub!

No worries, I just didn’t want to come across as being a pr1ck - I’ve spent ages trying to get my head around it as sooooo confusing and was costing me a fortune buying and trying the wrong bits!

As you, I’m sure there are exceptions that further confuse the ‘truth’.

I’m not convinced the last post by the OP looks right either! Surely it shouldn’t the that tight to the frame???

God knows… anyway, I’m still trying to head around the shifter/MTB/road end of the equation, pull ratios etc etc as with the age old shimano/campagnolo/Sram situ, some combos shouldn’t work, but in real life clearly do.

could someone please help out and let me know a replacement rigid fork that has been suspension-corrected.

The suspension fork I want to swap out for rigid is as per below.

Answer Manitou Spyder, Aluminum/magnesium, triple-clamp crown and it appears to have an axel to crown of 420mm roughly. I'm going to be running v brakes. I have found the surley 1 x 1, however these appear to no longer be made by surly.
