1998 Lava Dome going to single up front

Here are some pics. Took the trusty dirty work steed inside for some new brakes. After considering my options, I'm guessing that I'm in the market for a new cassette, chain, jockey wheels, middle 40 T ring from TA and some type of chain keeper device. Clutch mech and more gears will have to wait. As you can see I'm also in the market for some new tyres. I'm also in the market for a replacement front wheel (I didn't change the brakes in time  )

Re:

You don't need special chainrings or chain guides/devices to run a single chainring up front, road bikes were this way for decades before double and triple chainsets came along.

I've been running a 1x7 for several years with a plain 42t chainring up front and an 11-28, 7 speed cassette with no chain devices, other than the standard clutchless Deore II rear derailleur, with no issues whatsoever.

The only thing you may want to be mindful of is the chain line, so that the chain is straight when on the centre sprocket of a 7 or 9 speed rear cassette, or roughly central on an 8 or 10 speed.
