Quick snap; the new swing arm is now fitted.

It was said on the thread somewhere that you can mix/match the frames, but id like to add that is not the case, it took much effort as the mountings are a slightly different design. there is a notch that surrounds the main bearing on either side. however the pinch bolt on the older swingarm is fitted on the reverse side and the notch is lower down to accommodate it, so i spent a couple hours last night removing these notches with a file so that the swingarm can fit onto the later designed frame mountings.

Some things you can't foresee like those notches. Looks like you made short-work of them though.
Cool brake booster too. I had a bid in on a Shimano and lost so I ended up getting a Salsa instead.

Indeed, I guess you have to expect these things sometimes. The booster had to be carbon fibre xtr, as it matches the forks so nicely. Bought it from a chap on here who had a new set of washers/mounts machined for it.

Shouldn't be too long left for this build now, need to get some new cables chain and give it a service.

when the later 1998 is straight

Those two frames are different sizes. AFAIK Mediums always had straight TTs, Large and XL had curves (because the shock mount has to stay in the same place). Not sure what's going on with Wold Ranger's Small '97 with a curved TT, though...

That makes a lot of sense actually, now that you mention it. After all I did take the swing arm from a large and successfully fit it to a medium frame, but I thought nothing of it at the time :/

My Heckler

Here's my old battered Heckler. I'll have a go on restorate it some day, I can remember how it loved singletracks in the good old days The frame number is 97ZK01744 and the rearend is 97ZKR1848C so I gues it must be a 1997. I bought it from new in 97 but because it has cablestop for cantilever I have allways thought it was a 96.

Mine has the canti stop also, but looking at yours i assume mine is a very early 97, especially when it came matched with a 96 front

Jens_BM's swingarm is halfway between your two -- dropouts like the disc-mount swingarm but without the disc mounts
