1997 Kona ciner cone frankenstein

Hi, please may i ask everyones advice.

I just bought a 1997 Kona cinder cone for £145. I dont know much about mountain bikes, but remember really wanting this bike when I was a teenager.

I saw this on gumtree and impulsivley bought it, without doing any research on what parts are meant to come with this bike. I think I may have not spent my money wisely, as I took it out for a proper ride yesterday and only then realised that when in the two smallest cog settings on the rear wheel, the chain jumps a couple of inches every couple rotation of the crank. (I was hoofing it down a steep forest trail when this first happened lol, luckily I held on). I wish I had test rode it more thoroughly before I bought it.

Since getting back last night i have looked up the 1997 cinder cone specs online and realised that the crankset has been chaged to a 44 tooth instead of 42 on the big cog.
there is a sram derailleur on the back and shimano on the front, the grip shifts are not matching brands to either derailleur.
after watching youtube vids on it, I think the rear derailleurs a bit out of alignment too.

The guy I bought it from is saying that sram shifters and shimano derailleurs are compatible, but im reading the opposite so far. (does this article apply here: https://cyclingtips.com/2017/12/mixing- ... -doesnt-2/)

what do you guys think is causing this thing with the chain?
The guy I bought it from is saying that the two rear cogs teeth could be worn away.

Did I pay too much?

The back cassette is worn as is the chain - both will need replacing and is quite normal especially on an aged bike

As for price - its very subjective.

Re:

thanks retrospud. are the specs for the cassette on this bike the same as the modern bikes? would halfords still stock the correct parts i need for a 1997 kona?

Standard Shimano compatible 8 speed cassette and a 7/8 speed chain
Both can be bought from Halfords or online easy enough however to remove the cassette you will need a chain whip to hold the block still whilst you remove the lockring with lockring tool

You will also need to split the chain and most likely remove 5 or 6 links from the new one

Simple stuff if you have the kit but impossible to do without, your local bike shop will do it easy enough

thats great, thanks for your help with that dude.

please can i also ask, are the mishmash of sram/shimano shifters and Derailleurs an issue regarding correct shifting? or the 44 tooth shimano deor xt crankset an issue? thanks

So long as your shifters are 8 speed it doesn’t really matter it they are a mishmash

The chainrings won’t be an issue either certainly not dropping by just two teeth as you have - if you went more you might need to shorten the chain but that would mean dropping from 48 to the later compact size

ok thanks, phew.

would i be able to chuck these on, even though front derrilleur is shimano and rear is sram?

Unless you have a very modern SRAM rear mech they should be fine - a pic of the rear mech or model would help- however it’s the gap between the cassette which needs to index with the shifter (or visa versa) the mech is just the dumb slave in between

So long as you have an 8 speed cassette those shifters will index with it just fine.

just noticed i can only get 7 clicks out of my sram srt 600 shifter. all the numbers are worn off. could this be a 7 speed shifter, or does the derrailleur need setting up right?
