Shimano Deore DX Rear Hub - Slightly Rocking Freehub Body?

Hi Folks,

Firstly a little history.

I bought the hub new (NOS) in 2013.

At one time I installed an 8-10 Freehub Body on it to use a 9-speed cassette instead of the limited 12-32 7-speed SRAM cassette.

I learnt later that you could use 8 from 9-speed and 9 from 10-speed cassettes on a 7-speed HG hub.

I reinstalled the 7-speed freehub body and I have been using the 14-32 cogs from a 9-speed XT-M770 11-32 cassette paired with an Ultegra 9-speed 12t first position cog and a longer stroke adjuster crew with a 9-speed shifter to stop the derailleur from moving between the 32t cog and the spokes.

Back to the present.

I'm going to upgrade to 9 from 10 using the 15-34 cogs from a Shimano XT-M771 11-34 cassette paired with a Miche 13t 10-speed first position sprocket and friction shifters.

I can't remember what the hub was like when I first had it but the Bearing Races are in good order and I'm going to install Grade 10 Stainless Steel balls.

With the cassette removed, I can slightly rock the freehub body, in all directions, perpendicular to the axis of the axle. Is that the correct way to describe it?

In other words, for example, if the axle is in the horizontal plane, I can slightly rock the freehub body from Left to Right and Up and Down and the diagonals in between.

I checked the tightness of the Hex Bolt inside and I could only move it very slightly more.

Does something need greasing inside or is there some other reason for such movement. The freehub on two other hubs I have don't exhibit this behaviour.

Thanks!! and have a good weekend, MTB.

They all do that sir...

If it's tight and the axle is smooth, the play is in the freehub body. Shimano freehubs aren't adjustable.
A mil play at the large sprocket is normal, 2mm is getting too much, so you'd need to replace the fhb.

Sometimes you can shim the fhb bearings, but the part is generally viewed as unserviceable
