just noticed i can only get 7 clicks out of my sram srt 600 shifter. all the numbers are worn off. could this be a 7 speed shifter, or does the derrailleur need setting up right?

You will only get 7 clicks out of an 8 speed gripshift as you start at one and the first click gets you second gear and so on

If your planning on changing them then I wouldn’t fret, the big question is how many sprockets do you have at the back wheel as an 8 speed cassette won’t fit a 7 speed body without a lot of surgery. Eight speed would be correct for the period

If you do have 7 speed and 8 speed mashup then you will have bad alignment at either the top or the bottom of the gears and could account for the poor performance of either the first two or last two gears

trying to post some photos, doesnt seem to want to work.

Yeah that is one of the bug bears here - the file size is limited

Try taking a screen shot of your pic on your phone and the lower resolution should then get you under the size limit

By the Full XC experience - he means your long and low like a cross country racer from the 1990’s - head down arse up - The stem on that bike stretches you out

Al-onestare (great guy) has a fetish for Marzocchi Z1 and Z2 aka bombers (they were a step up from all others back in the day) and dislikes Rockshox, to be honest get the bike working and then think about the forks - new elastomers (internals) will freshen them up no end.

I can’t see a problem with that rear mech but can’t say I’ve ever owned or worked on one so will let others answer your question

Lastly that chain looks very clean / a lot newer than the cassette if it’s new then there lays your problem new chain old block is guaranteed to give you problems as they should be replaced together
