@ reagan-ev ..................... think you should be doing a lap too ;)
@ retro spud Cheers for that mate
Don't worry Nick I'll bring plenty of banter if nothing else - my riding legs went a long time ago! But I'll have a bike with me to threaten the chance of a lap Gareth. I'm gonna be getting into training and a healthier lifestyle in the new year to prepare. Now that you're building a whole bike for the event, least I can do is build enough fitness for one lap! :p

Re: 1993 Stumpjumper project

Hi mate
No worries about the headset but if yours is 1 & 1/8th then I doubt its a 93.
1995 on for 1 &1/8th from memory.

Re: 1993 Stumpjumper project

Hi mate
I have had a good few Stumpies over the years and sadly I don't have my dealers catalogues anymore but I can give a few observations from my experience.
The serial numbers don't mean much on these old Stumpies as it was only ever the S Works that ran in a proper order as Stumpies were made in several places depending on tubesets used.
The 93 model you had the link to in the other thread is running a 1 inch headset, have not seen a 1 inch headset pre 95 on any Stumpy. Standard Specialized equipment was 1 inch Aheadsets throughout the range. The A headset I offered was original from my 1994.
In the pics yours looks to have the slightly larger diameter steel down tube and top tube that was introduced in 1995, which would correspond to your headtube. The down tube and top tube were increased in diameter to match and beef up the now larger head tube.
I could be wrong about your tubes and it could just be the pics and the way I am seeing it. I can measure my 1994 tomorrow and see if it matches, but basically should be the same as the seat tube.
The noodle for the brake was used from 1990 through to 1995/6 on steel Stumpies from memory.
I was just pointing out the obvious and didn't mean to cause you confusion or be a pain in the arse, but if Specialised didn't have a 1 & 1/8th head tube until 95 I can't see how this is a 93 model.
Here is a couple of really old pics of my 94 (red) and my 95 (blue) you can maybe see the difference in the tube diameters. I can't remember off the top of my head what the increase was in tube diameter but it was only very slight but enough to give it a more solid look, less of a skinny frame whippet type of the earlier one.
Anyway, that's my take on it and thought you might find it interesting.
Cheers
Jamie

Re:

No probs :)

Any advice or info greatfully received :D
Everything you have said makes sense, it does have the butting on the seat tube like your blue one.

I have edited the title to reflect this.

Here is a better side on pic :

Re:

Bit of an update.

Wife was at her works xmas party last night so i had the chance for some festive fettling :xmas-big-grin:

Got the headset and bottom bracket in.
Fitted the USE post and shim and my restored Flite which i'm really pleased with.

Then got the Rond forks in ( with lovely polished canti cable hanger made by Rampage ) but need some headset spacers before i can trim the steerer.

Fitted a chrome rear cage plate to my 8 speed rear mech as i prefer them to the standard black ones.

Cleaned up the chainset and gave it a quick polish and fitted a good Blackspire 32 tooth middle ring as the original was well worn..

Then this morning i fitted the NOS wheels ( Sachs Classic hubs and Alesa rims) and obligatory Splashbacks and i'm pretty stoked with the way it's turning out :xmas-big-grin:

MERRY CHRISTMAS :xmas-cool:

Re: 1993 Stumpjumper project

Looking very smart so far mate
Those forks suite it perfectly.

Re: 1993 Stumpjumper project

Looking fantastic mate! Chris did a cracking job on that fork brace!

Re: 1993 Stumpjumper project

That is very very nice! I hope some decals are planned to be applied on there :)

What glue did you use when you re-did your flite saddle? I am looking for red flite but as it seems, since it is rare, I will be redoing one of the old cheap black ones so I am gathering information beside those that I already found on indestructibles website.
