Afternoon All!

With the sun shining and stuff, I thought it was time to dust of the bike of my teenage years a well used 1995 Marin Bear valley SE 19"

Some bits have seen better days so a bit of recommissioning and upgrading is in order.

The GripShift 600's are going in favour of some STX-RC shifters, the Marin-Lite Canti brakes are being replaced by an STX-RC V Brake setup.

I need some advise on bottom bracket/cassette/chain please though....can someone advise on current replacement parts?

Cheers

Chris

Hi Chris,

i would probably put on some Shimano HG 50 7-speed cassette and chain too. That's good quality for a resonable price and a good match for your STX stuff i think.
When you really need a new bottom bracket i guess the Shimano BB-UN54 is a good choice. You have to check the lenght of your old axis to pic the right one for you. These three things together would be 35€ or so @Rose or Brüggelmann.

Welcome to Retrobike,

Adam

For cassettes, the ratio doesn't matter, 11-28 12-32 up to you really.
Scour ebay and chainreactioncycles for the parts then do a quick websearch

The Marin 1995 catalouge is in the Archive&Gallery, accessed by hiting the word at the top of the page :)

If you switch to v'brakes, you need to switch the brake levers from the dicomp ones as well. Though as awkward as marin lights are to get correct, why not just change the brake blocks ?

Fit some new cables and get running. Worry about new stuff later, the SRT600 should be fine, though if you don't want them I'm after some 7sp SRT600's ;)

anythign else you need to know as I have one of them I can look at.

I did have a look at the catalogue cheers!

Managed to pick up a whole STX-RC v brake setupf for £14.99 on eBay...so going to have a play.

Any idea what the bottom bracket size is? It's knakered on mine....

Most likely a 68mm shell X 110mm axle length, but when you take it out you can measure it all.

A Shimano UN54 are readily available, will last quite a long time and shouldn't be to expensive.

I don't know why..but I seem to remember asking about a un54 for my old 93 bvse and was told 68 x 122.5?

Probably would have had an older chainset on, maybe requiring a longer BB axle length.

Sheldon's site has a chart with the info on for many bikes and chainsets.
