1993 Specialized Hardrock Ultra

I got this off CL this weekend. It's a 1993 Specialized Hardrock Ultra, 20", cranberry/purple fade. The frame and the fork are in near mint condition. It has a GS200 drive train that is also in good condition. According to the German Specialized 1992 and 1993 catalogs, the HR Ultra had GS200 components in 1992, and moved to Altus A20 for 1993. The paint job on this bike is clearly from 2003, though the 2002 standard Hardrock seems to have a similar fade paint job to the 1993 Ultra? I'm not sure if this is an early model 2003 that still had GS200 or if this drive train was put on afterwards. My bet is this is an early model 2003 that came with 2002 specs. The rear wheel is not original, I believe the front wheel is, though it's missing some washers (original wheels were bolt on). The front wheel is a Sugino hub laced to what looks to be an Araya double wall rim as listed in the catalog. I should note, this old Sugino hub is really smooth! Additional original items include the HTI pedals, headset, stem, bar, and seat post, and front A20 brakes, and bottom bracket (rear brakes, and rear lever/shifter missing).

1993 Specialized Hardrock Ultra - Ready to Roll

I put this together for my niece. She loves the paint job. I like Specialized bikes. I paid $45 in original condition as first pics. I bought another donor bike (Giant Rincon) for $50, and new chain, grips, and bottom bracket cable guide for $25; nice retro rec bike for $120 :)

Nice looking Hard Rock. My first decent MTB was an 89 Hard Rock. I didn't really do any real trail riding back then, but I have many pleasant memories of just cruising around town to parties or punk shows and hitting the beach. I'm actually looking for another frame to build up into a pub bike, beach cruiser.

Thanks, guys!

My first MTB was also a 1989, I went with the Rockhopper. I put a Tioga stem and some Ground Control tires on it. I loved that bike. Yeah, parties & punk shows :)

Good luck on your hunt, krakhaus!

Hey Graham_hkr, looks like you are a fellow Hardrocker :) You have a 2005 and 06? Sweet! There are usually a couple older Hardrocks for sale in my area on CL, but usually they are too small 17" frames. I'm sure you'll find one soon. What size frame you after?

It's probably not feasible to ship a bike from New Mexico to Hull East, but take a look at these two for sale right now. The green one might be an 1989, give or take a year or two? It looks to have mostly if not all, original parts. Even the grips look original to me. Even though it's too small (for me), it might be a good parts bike if it really is original as looks. I like the way the ad is titled 'Bike'. Lots of people try to get top dollar for 'vintage' Specialized, but here the name is not even mentioned. This bike probably would have sold already with a proper ad and a higher price :)

Hi SP..
Yeah, the selling strategy seems very simple over there... ''good tread on the tyres & innertubes are sound'' what's a typical Standard size, like in the bottom pic?
Prices look reasonable tho, I would be looking for 19''/20'' frame ideally, I have a contact in shipping so might be feasible, I may have to check that out.
I do like the old stuntjumpers tho... ;)

haha - I just read this... right, good tread on the tires; that's really all ya need to know!

I'm on the hunt for a Stumpjumper too. I'll send you a link if I run across something Specialized in your size :)
