That's a Gravity Dropper dropper post, actuated by that knob sticking out the back.

Probably not that nice to look at, but still a great design as these dropper posts are very reliable and relatively light. I like them a lot.
 
Woah...their website is HTML throw-back to the max. They re-registered their domain name last month, so they are still active. I guess if it isn't broke- don't fix it (the old HTML interface that is).

Last innovative update of their products was a decade ago. I bet these are more reliable than the modern stuff.
 
I hope they stay active. They've got a great product.
I've got three of these posts in my bikes. All were bought used, some hardware (delrin) was changed and they all still work. Despite being nearly 10 years old each.
 
...better than the frame exploding. Shrapnel all over heck. Blood and frame everywhere. Did you notice a difference in traction on climbs comparing the old with the newer tire?
 
It's likely that I would notice, but had no chance to ride on any loose surface since the swap yet. Took that pic the morning before changing the tyres.
