****1992 Klein Rascal - cable help required****

Dirt Disciple
Purchased a '92 Klein rascal frame from ebay recently (if you want to know, its the large green frame resprayed by Argos Cycles).

Anyway, a Klein is something I lusted after in the early '90's so now I have one. Looks in good nick, but need help with how to route the cables. Yes, its not an attitude, but its a start :)

Its my first ever build from scratch and I have done the hard bit (the thin nylon tubing is now fed through) but was wondering how the cables are routed from exiting the down tube to the rear mech and front mech?

I tried to do some picture searches on the net to see this area of Klein frames but with limited success - Does the nylon cable exit the hole on the downtube a little, to prevent the mech cable from slapping the frame? Should I use a short length of outer cable from the exit hole to the BB to protect everything from ruining the nice new paint (or would this look totally weird?)

Any help (maybe closeup pics of BB and downtube?) from Klein owners would be useful.

Cheers.

ah ha. this old chestnut.

the best way to do this is get a long inner cable and a string magnet. feed the cable down the tueb from the head tube end. use the magnet to feed it out fo the end whole. now tape the cabel to the frame so it does nto slip uo.

if tyou have a nylon insert all ready to have to fettle to pull it out. i uses a soldering iron to melt one end and pull it out the other.

Then get one end of your new nylon and flare it a little with some head and push it on to say a phillips screw driver or some such to give it a flare at one end so it does not go all the way through the tube.

then feed it on to the inner cable and through the frame. just before the flared end goes in the frame add a small about of soft glue to make sure it does not move then remove the inner cable.

Job done.
Hope that works for you.

Cheers
Pete

thanks.

Slightly difficult to visualise - can you (or someone else) post a pic from where the cables exit to the BB.

I can then get some visual idea of how to do it....

sorry to be a pain!

Some (ME!) would say better than Attitude. After all, a Rascal is essentially an Attitude without the goofy proprietary headset mumbo jombo.

Rascal is very much a legit Klein. Its a great frame and I know you'll love it! :D

Agreed- I can't understand why Rascals sell for half the price of the other Kleins.

Cheers for the positive's on the "real Klein" issue!

Should be fun to build and ride....

BTW - forks will be pace RC 35's and the goupset will be essentially m739 XT plus some other bits.

RASCALS !!!!!! love them !!!
yea the clear cable outers do pass through the exit holes to protect the frame.... i cant remember but i think under the bb there should be another seperate piece of clear outer that curves around the underside of the bb....

check out the rascal owners club.....

i also love the rascals... ride really nicely... and are much easier to work on that attitudes and adroits as they have the standard 1" headset..

also do you have the klein chain device fitted to your frame ?
if not ive got one for sale if you are interested ? ;)

I looked at the klein catalogue from 1992 (on RB archive). Seems that there is a small amount of the inner nylon tube sticking out on the attitude and adroit pics. The cable is then bare until it is routed under the curved router under the BB.

Thanks to all!

I don't have the chain device yet, its on my list - as are a thousand Christmas presents for various people, so the bike stuff is gonna have to wait :(

Once it is in build i'll start a thread....could take some time to get going though....
