1991 Marin Team Titanium

The chainset has also been sat in a box for more years than I can recall. It was always in component form, as I was waiting for ages to find a black Mavic outer chainring. I finally put it all together today, but I’m unsure on the choice of black outer chainring bolts, so I may swap these out for silver. I could also try and find a silver middle ring to take the visual weight off it all - It just looks a bit heavy!

Over the years of collecting bits I think might one day be useful, I’ve a fair few Titanium bottom brackets sat waiting their turn. I’m particularly fond of Action Tec as their design was so simple, and usually among the lightest available. I was still buying spares from them until a couple of years ago when everything just went silent. Still short of a few cups, so I’m always on the lookout. I bought a second hand pair recently, but they were really faded, and red, so they’d need some TLC before installing.
The old oven cleaner trick worked a charm as you can see through the various stages.

Very nice, coming along a treat. I like the all black crankset, matches with the hubs and makes for a no nonsense look, let the flouro yellow be the highlight.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

I’ll fit the cranks as they are, and then make a decision once the rest has come together.

Catalogue bikes don’t really inspire me that much, as they’re almost always off the shelf component choice. Nobody ever raced them like that back in the day, and my mind is always on modifying things to make the best of what’s available. I remember buying a brand new mech years ago, and the first I’d do is purchase the respective bolts to lighten it before it touched the bike. Whilst I’m not precious about exact OEM spec, I am relatively particular about components matching a period in time of what was available, which I always like my bikes to reflect. Plus, a small degree of patina ain’t a bad thing.

Seat pin bolt was another ‘long stored’ component I’d had waiting, although the titanium bolt needed a swap out for a 50mm one.

I’ll share a few photos from today, and its current status. I’m just waiting on a few bits to progress any further now.
M734 cantis are on, but for some reason I’ve no bolts or straddles, so I’ve ordered some titanium button head bolts, and the correct type A 73mm straddles.
The rear mech isn’t NOS, but very straight, so it got a quick polish up, and HarryCrumb helped to swap the pivot bolt out for a titanium version - I can never seem to get everything back together when changing these pivot bolts! For the infrequency that I need to do it, it’s easier to simply drop it at his house and buy him a beer instead.
The front mech is the best of three I have, and it’s NOS.
The shifters are NOS XT rapidfire which have been sat in a zip seal bag almost since 1991!
I like the repeating Mavic logo as your eyes scan across the bike.
The XT seat post is pretty hammered like most of them, and I’ve sent it to be re-finished this week. I’m not sure what to expect, but it’s an experiment to see if can be brought back to life. I prefer the idea of using an original one rather than the Kalloy copies.

Yep that´s looking very good, and I´m usually not bored by catalogue builds. But most Ti builds just go for the clean colourless Merlin look, the neon front end mixes things up nicely.
Oh and yes to silver chainring bolts!

This is sooooooo nice, love every bit of it.

I think if I were you and I had the money I would go for a snazzier rear mech like mavic or something.
