In England, big queue in the bakers, fine to say 'Large bloomer please'
No offence, smile from assistant, bloomer presented. All good.

In Switzerland this would be regarded as VERY rude.

In bakers in village you have to say:

'Good day (monsieur/madame) - (smile, pause) - I would like a mattress (paillasse) please. Thank you.'

THIS is alright. Anything less is considered jolly rude.
