1984 Raleigh Record Sprint

I know the full history of this bike. I have the original 1984 purchase document and full provenience for this build. It was only lightly ridden and unused for so many years that the parts show very little wear, just seizure from lack of use.

Bottom bracket was repacked today and the crank arms refitted with the help of my trusty rubber mallet and block of wood. The freewheel slid so easily onto the Helicromatic spline and was tightened using the locking tool which arrived from America last week.

Wheels with new gum wall tyres, new cables, chain plus derailleur, gear and brake adjustment will complete the build tomorrow.

Really looking forward to giving this bike its first test ride.

Once I had a right crank come loose while riding in the mountains of Wales, the thread was stripped and a loose bolt the cause, I don’t carry a socket set with me on rides. So call it superstition if you like, but ever since when fitting the crank arms I use one clout with my trusty rubber mallet and wood to seat the crank on spindle before tightening the nut. So each to their own!

Finished the refurb this afternoon. It rides beautifully smooth even if a bit big for me at 23.5" this will be kept special. Hope to ride it at VR Ulverston next year, although I must get some serious hill training in before then.

Ps flip the seat clamp so it’s up inside the seat, that’ll get you an extra inch lower and look more tidy

I have never used a fish on a bicycle, rubber or otherwise.
