1982 Salsa Scoboni #5 "Restoration" *Final Photos Page 11*

Re: 1982 Salsa Scoboni #6 Build Restoration

Rooming with Henry Rollins, damn, how cool is that?! Love Rollins, the mans a legend!

You wanna paint it, go for it! It's not the original paint and you have Terry's full support, 'nuff said! The paint it's wearing right now does nothing for me either, don't blame you for changing it. Besides your plan sounds great and with Terry's help it'll make it very original.
All the ball buster's saying save the paint, you've been given the chance, step up and take over...anyone...anyone...

I say kill the cow

Exactly. Save the cow!

Well....that is why I am putting it out to our circle of collectors. If you want to save it then now is your chance.... Otherwise if no one ponies up to the project, then I am going to continue on with the restoration. I am putting it on hold for a couple months and will continue to listen.

Like I said before, the paint is not original therefore in my book it's a candidate for a repaint. I understand that this paint screams the 80's decade and the paint is recognizable the way it is.

I talked in depth with Terry about my plans for the repaint..... we even took a video of him walking us through the bike and explaining what we would need to do to bring it back to the way it orginally was.

He is very comfortable with our vision and he is helping us with the restoration by providing original decals, paint codes, touches that he had initially put on the bike that were not on the other 6 (checkerboard chainstays). He sold us the bike giving us the ok to paint.... if he wasn't comfortable with it then we wouldn't have bought it from him.

So if you want to save the cow and save this paint... speak up now or forever hold your peace.

Time for a wallet wave! Bueller? Anyone?

Oh ya that cow is cool it would be a shame to loose that. I think you want to respray because of the yellow. I would suggest to sleep with the frame for a couple of nights and I am sure you will change your mind. Otherwise you'll be "that guy"

Which guy is "that guy"?

Re: 1982 Salsa Scoboni #6 Build Restoration

this discussion is getting ever more heated! :D I've heard good arguments for and against getting the old paint job off. in the end all we can only agree with 'Canuck'

that said, the Salsa (='adventure by bike' not 'adventure in the museum') needs someone to love it back and be ridden. If the OP will ride it more when he's done with it I think the bike will agree.

Re: 1982 Salsa Scoboni #6 Build Restoration

There is only one person who has the right to paint it or not.

The owner!

I think you are being very generous in letting someone else take ownership of what is still going to be an important frame regardless of the paint it wears. If they are prepared to pony up that is.

I agree with both of the (heavily excerpted) quotes above... although certainly not with the overall points being made in their original versions.

It's interesting to look at where the various advice is coming from. And the types of bikes owned and collected by those giving it. I think TPC is getting pretty consistent advice from those who have bikes of this type (rare/early/important)... and it's great that he's (at least considering) heeding it.

As promised here is a video interview we did w/ Terry Holben, the original owner of this Salsa.

Good job boys, amazing that a steel frame can last that long. Testament to the maker. Again I vote don't respray. Its skin tells the story, and I want to hear the stories.
