Nailed it Shaun, I found some photos today where a guy has done exactly that, and it looks very neat, so I will copy that technique.
 
This may sound silly, but I took the inside plastic tube from a ball point pen and slid it over the cable and into the cable guide. My cable guide was a little rough and kept shredding the cable after 6 months or so. This solved the problem and it also made the shifting much smoother. Just find a pen with a clear tube, cut it to the proper length, wash out the ink and put a dab of grease on the cable where it goes through the tube. It worked great and you really can't even see it.
