Re:

The Simplex LJ 23 front mech and cable guide again caked in grime came up really well apart from some pitting on the chrome cage. Might have it rechromed but then it's not original...Mmm... not sure.

Re:

Simplex LJ 23 shifters are looking a bit tired, managed to get lucky at Ripley bike jumble back in the summer and found a new set with cables for twenty quid... happy with that.

Re:

I mentioned at the beginning of this post the only non original part on the PX is a Campag rear skewer, front is the correct Simplex but looking a bit tatty. Looking on eBay the price for a decent pair of Simplex skewers is more than i paid for the bike...hmmm something will turn up at a jumble. Result...got lucky and found a pair of Exceltoo Super Competition hubs with near mint condition Simplex skewers. Usually the plastic wing nuts get broken or lost and lever hoods scuffed and ripped, amazingly these have survived intact....hands shook on four quid. :D

Re:

Pulled the forks out yesterday, degreased with petrol and buffed up with Mer and Solvo. Under the paint at the top of the fork blades I can just make out Reynolds 531 and 18/22...any information what these last digits mean ?.
Headset turned out bright and sparkly. 8)

All the components are off the frame now except the headset cups which I don't want to disturb as it's bedded in over the last sixty years. Drive side bearing cup is also staying put as it has right-hand thread (french threading) and has been center dotted for security.
Forks weighing in at 720g with crown race...so 700g approximately.
Frame coming in at 2160g with bearing cup...so 2110g... maybe less with all that crud removed.

Re:

That is coming up really lovely.
Keep the updates coming as look forward to them.
:)

Good job done. You should be able to get the price of the Simplex skewers (and hubs) back from selling the straight lever Campag skewer.
