11 speed indexed downtube shifter

I'll have to look into a triple crankset then.

Back to l'Eroica then, does anyone know if there is a limit to the number of sprockets at the back?

If you're still on standard 39t inner chainring, then a compact might be easier.... No guarantee it will work, but I swapped out the chainset on my campag 10 speed drivetrain for a compact and it works perfectly, with no need to change the rear mech (short cage and running a 29t sprocket), front mech or shifters. Shorter chain required but that's easy. A triple will probably mean a new front mech and BB as a minimum. If you're already using a compact, then forget what I just said 🤣

I reckon if you turns up to L'Eroica with 11 on the back, the bearded ones will wait till it's just you and them in their baggy woolen cycling shorts and little schoolboy caps.

On a little road in a shady forest, they'll pull out their frame-fit Silca pumps and do you over. 😬

This ⬆️ Turn up with 11 speeds and you’re a mark. (They take their time too - you think you can out run them with that massive range, but they have staying power despite having to hammer cotters and fettle friction shifters.)

You need to toughen up and go 10 speed (2 up front, 5 behind). 💪

That's the 10 speed I was brought up on

And compact chainset? What’s wrong with 42/52?

Throw in some brakes that don't actually do anything, a saddle as comfortable as sitting on a brick, rat trap pedals that will not release you under any circumstances and hard slimy bar tape and you're ready to ride!
Don't forget the flapping anorak and brogues😎
