Suggestions for getting a tire off of rim

Hans Dampf wire bead? I very nearly swore at those. Third worst tyre i've ever had to fit. Second was a Vittoria 33mm (UCI compliant) CX tyre on to a wide rim (the width makes a difference) First was a wire bead winter tyre with ~300 studs each, weighing in at a mere 900 grams and covered in...

Powder coating.....how much do you loose?!

Exactly, the testing I did was to work out the effects (positive and negative) of various media/pressure/nozzles/patterns on different materials and masking material. So we ended up with curves to follow, what media and what pressure, to maximize cleanliness, minimize cycle time, minimize damage.

Powder coating.....how much do you loose?!

I designed a load of experiments for media blasting of various grades of steel, aluminum's, nickel based alloys and so on. Exactly to check surface damage, material loss etc etc for process optimisation. Unfortunately, it was 20+ years ago and covered under the OSA, so I can't remember and even...

Hollowtech II play - is the preload cap too long?

So now your indexing is all to shit... And you have less engagement of the spline. I'd just change the preload cap from one of the shorter ones you already have. Because spline engagement and indexing are both more important than making full using of a too long preload cap...

    “Seller refurbished” (finger quotes)

:D I've had more than one bike brought to me after a "owner service" has been completed. They're usually lucky if they can get away with a complete re-cabling, new chain and freewheel. Had one guy who'd adjusted his sons front and rear mechs with a hammer and a pair of pliers.

    Confession time.....I'm gravel curious !

I've just bought a gravel light/endurance bike. Room for 35mm tyres, but drops, discs and (dare I say it) Di2. Fantastic for the gravel roads and double tracks round here. If I want to ride singletrack I'll get one of the mtbs or CX bikes out. I think it'll get a lot of use though. Will probably...

    Hope team green?

I've got some team green bits here. Can confirm it's a much more lurid green!

    Stop bleeping at me! And winking….I think it’s W R O N G ….

Ahhh. Ahhh. So you mean virtually none then 😉 I've only actually seen one shockwiz in the wild... I suppose AXS shifter batteries aren't rechargeable. But what sort of loon would buy AXS. 🤣

    Stop bleeping at me! And winking….I think it’s W R O N G ….

And which batteries on a bike aren't rechargeable? Most computers have inbuilt batteries, same for most decent lights. And buying enough cells to fill an e-bike battery pack would be insane.

    Stop bleeping at me! And winking….I think it’s W R O N G ….

Hmmmmm, my Garmin hasn't made a sound for 6 years, when I switched the beep off.

Fitting larger profile tyres to road bike - seatpost clearance

Current road bike has ~3mm under the crown, I've had no issues with that other than a few scratches in the paint. All long as you're not planning to ride crappy roads covered in mud.

Issues with Spa Cycles - advice?

It's a small volume part with very simple processes, it's probably contacted out by whoever owns the sugino name to the cheapest machine shop they can find who wants the work. If this was 10-15 years ago, I'd not be surprised to find the holes being cut on a pillar drill and tapped by hand. But...

    cursed gears....

Yes, my retro shifted "fine". Until I got the tool. Now it's flawless shifting. Gone from a fraction of a second of rattling as the chain settles down, to now it's just a click, clonk. If anything it's better than the 10 and 11 speed stuff I have. (Smaller jumps between gears might help though!)

    cursed gears....

Check the cables aren't hanging up on anything. Had a few bikes like this through my hands over the years. Outer cable pulls tight and just knocks the rear mech over a fraction of a mm... Can also be as the mech/cage cycles through its motion with chain growth. Amplifies the effect of a tweaked...

    cursed gears....

Eyeballing works well enough for 8 and 9 speed, but once you get into 10 11 12 the calibrated eyeball is no longer good enough. I reckon on new frames somewhere between 30 and 50% are bent, or at least not accurately made/installed. I got a lifeline tool about 15 years ago, for about 15 quid...

    Help identifying Diamondback road bike

Whaley Bridge (the bike factory) is Fred Salmons place, he still (to the best of my knowledge!) owns the place. Has done for best part of 20 years. Nick Craig works for Scott. (And rode for Diamond back racing when it was under the Raleigh group management.) I've had a closer look at the...

    Tubeless Rim Compatibility.

Ghetto tubeless on a road bike is generally to be avoided unless you're well versed in the dark arts of tyre bead stretch (or lack of) and rim shelves and suchlike. The risk of a high pressure explosion and shredded tyre wrapping itself round rim, hub and frame is very high and real...
