Suggestions for getting a tire off of rim

Retro Newbie
I purchased a Diamondback Release several months ago. I experienced my first flat on it the other day and I am having a helluva a time getting the tire off the rim. The tire is a 27.5 Schwalbe Hans Dampf mounted on a DB Blanchard 28R rim. I cannot get the bead to pop out with tools or even by standing on the tire and pulling upward on the rim. I’ve fixed flats many times and have never had this problem. It almost seems like the tire is glued or fused to the rim. Any suggestions are welcome.

I have a 2.35 Hans Dampf on a Sun rim which is an exercise in suffering to remove. They seem to have a pretty strong bead and don't come off easy for me either. I have some Michelin levers and a lot of patience. Slowly opening it up bit by bit with the tyre levers got it there. I am not looking forward to fixing it on trailside either :\

Harsh language directed at Hans and his family doesn't help but does make you feel better.

Have you tried warming the tyre up on the radiator or with a hairdryer? also a bowl of very hot soapy water can help.

Have a look at the Spa Cycles website for fitting instructions for Schwalbe Marathons, they have similar problems with tight beads.

you are going to need 3 levers.
push the bead off the seat to the centre of the rim. do this all the way round.
with the tyre push against your stomach to hold the bead in the centre of the rim, put 2 levers beneath the bead, 1 at the 1 oclock position and 1 at the 11 oclock position (with your stomach at the 6 oclock position). lever one lever (I'm left handed so it's normally that one)to push the bead over the rim edge and look it on to a spoke (that's what the hook is for, who knew :) ) now pull the other lever on the rim edge so the bead and bit between the 2 levers is over the edge of the rim. clip it in place.
pick a side and put your third lever under the bead at the 2-3 oclock position, it will be hard to get the lever under the bead so you might have to come closer to one of the other levers. pop the bead of the rim and lock the lever to a spoke. now remove the one in the middle and repeat at the 4 oclock position. once 1/4-1/3 of the bead is over the rim the rest should come away easy. you might have to repeat this for the other side.

this is how we used to fit car difficult car tyres and it works for bikes as well.

Fitting a marathon to a brompton rim is a higher level of pain. The videos make it just about doable. I practically filled both tubes with sealant afterwards as I wasn't going to repeat it until the tyre was worn out.

OP, the bead of some modern tyres is designed to sit/almost clip onto the rim so you can go tubeless if you wish. Try and push it down/in on both sides all of the way around before trying to get a lever under it and lift up. It sometimes takes all of my strength to get the first bit off the rim, but the rest goes quickly enough afterwards.

I would to necessarily use the vice technique here, but it shows the problem well:

Hans Dampf wire bead?

I very nearly swore at those.
Third worst tyre i've ever had to fit.

Second was a Vittoria 33mm (UCI compliant) CX tyre on to a wide rim (the width makes a difference)
First was a wire bead winter tyre with ~300 studs each, weighing in at a mere 900 grams and covered in sharp, gougy studs. So not only a bastard to get on the rim, many of the usual tricks leave you with shredded skin...

Pour vegetable oil all around the inside of the rim. Make it greasy. Make it messy. I can almost guarentee you won't even need tyre levers after that.

You want these tyre levers, forget big fat heavy duty ones. I have probably mentioned it before but brand new Enve wheel with a Schwalbe tyre fitted tubeless and I got a puncture first time out. Tried everything to get it off and in the end it was these levers and washing up liquid around the bead. Even when I got one bead off I still struggled to get off the other. Spotting a bit of a theme with Schwalbe's.
