    Wanted 26.8mm seatpost

Looking for something nice, preferably around the £50 mark, for an old GT build. I've got the original, but something a little lighter (and nicer looking) would be good. Oh and preferably posted, unless you're in the Edinburgh area :)

    Kirk - Really that bad?

Well, I caved and grabbed it, for much cheapness. Mostly original - 400LX group set, but XT m092 shifters for some reason. The frame flex is hysterical - probably just end up stripping it down and using the frame as a wall ornament...

    Kirk - Really that bad?

So it was 1991. Normal mountain bikes were boring - you had to get something with a 'quirk'. Trimble, Pace, Proflex, whatever. My best mate bought an e-stay Alpinestars Al-Mega. I wanted the two-wheel drive bike that MBUK reviewed. I bought a GT (triple triangle's better than nothing...

Newest purchase GT Zaskar, possibly 1991?

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar possibly 1991? Oh crap :( Rather than try for a repair, I'd look at buying one of the later model mech hangers and find a friendly local machinist with a milling machine to make it fit. I'm not convinced you'd get any long-term strength from any repair you tried...

Newest purchase GT Zaskar, possibly 1991?

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar possibly 1991? Nice - plain and simple, no frills - the way a Zaskar should be :) From a personal point of view, think I'd want the front end at least 20mm lower, given the non-corrected frame geometry, but that's just my preference. Is there much difference...

    Early Zaskar frame

Serial number 0491 - April '91 must be about as early as they come? Shame the dropout's been chopped about, but then that was always the weak point, so if it's been done right... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gt-Zaskar-199 ... 1657682560

Newest purchase GT Zaskar, possibly 1991?

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar possibly 1991? If it's got a new serial number on it, then it's probably stolen-recovered. I seem to remember when the police had their occasional sales of bikes that had been recovered but not claimed, they'd put a new serial number on if none existed. On...

Newest purchase GT Zaskar, possibly 1991?

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar unknown year '92 catalogue pics. The Zaskar's got pretty chunky welds in this pic too, maybe they were still getting the hang of it :) Also the UK spec for the Pantera was massively different to the catalogue. About the only thing in common with what we got in...

Newest purchase GT Zaskar, possibly 1991?

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar unknown year My Zaskar's quite a lot later, but one thing I've noticed is that the welds are *much* neater than on the Pantera. Around the headtube in particular they're seriously scruffy - see below. In the catalogue, though, they're so similar, it's hard to...

Newest purchase GT Zaskar, possibly 1991?

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar unknown year '92 Pantera - bare frame. Unless the paint weighs 13oz, I guess yours must be a Zaskar - really don't see what else it can be :)

Newest purchase GT Zaskar, possibly 1991?

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar unknown year Oh well, scratch that idea, then. The weight should be a reasonable indicator, at least :)

Newest purchase GT Zaskar, possibly 1991?

Re: That is mine. Sadly, it turns out that the frame is bent  Another thought occurs - the Pantera of that year had a 26.8mm seat post and the frame weighs 4lb 13oz. My later Pantera and the Zaskar I own both have 27.2mm seat posts and the Zaskar frame comes in at just under 4lb. If...

Newest purchase GT Zaskar, possibly 1991?

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar unknown year Definitely a weird one. Non-replaceable dropout means it has to be '92 or earlier, but the serial number doesn't match a Pantera (both mine start with an 'H'), or the numberic format that the Zaskar should be. I'd definitely be looking for either...

1991 GT Xizang W/Chromoly rear tri

I think the only people who will worry about the stickers and component spec are those who don't fully appreciate what the frame represents and those people are unlikely to want to pay the price you could quite rightfully ask for it, even fully specced-up with XTR. Those who do know what it is...

    Panterae - 2 become 1 become...?

It's interesting to see the weight difference between the two frames. Would be curious to see where the blue one comes in at, given that it's between the two age-wise, even if it's 7000-series alloy rather than the 6061 of the black bike. The tubing's definitely thinner-walled, to my eye...

To all you running modern set ups on old frames/bikes

To my mind, there's three things to consider - weight, reliability and cost. Previously, you could choose one of those, two on a good day. Now you get two and very occasionally, three. Modern drivetrains, rubber and brakes can be as reliable as you like, but significantly lighter than than...
