Newest purchase GT Zaskar, possibly 1991?

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar possibly 1991?

Well try as hard as I could I couldn't get the Easton Monkeybar into the Syncros Cattleprod despite using the coin trick, went up to £1 for thickness but wasn't happy stretching it more than that so fitted a flat but wide Clubroost bar, think the colour suits but will now be looking for the same stem with 10degree rise.

The front brake needs shortening but it'll do for now. Time to cable up and wait for the postman to deliver the last bits.

Emailed Gil today re decals, going for the 1991 black and white standard Zaskar, not LE due to XT build. Hope you like the way this is going, I'm chuffed :)

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar possibly 1991?

Nice - plain and simple, no frills - the way a Zaskar should be :)

From a personal point of view, think I'd want the front end at least 20mm lower, given the non-corrected frame geometry, but that's just my preference.

Is there much difference between '91 and '92 decals? Think I only looked for '92 for mine...

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar possibly 1991?

Thanks StealthDJ.

I now have bigger issues than slightly too much travel, first major issue I've had since coming to RetroBike and now I see why replacement mech hangers are such a good idea. Glad this happened at home rather than out in the wilds though.

I stupidly didn't realise this had a thread save in already making the hanger very thin, now I know. Bloody Hell!!!!!

Anyone here able to weld aluminium or know of a good place/way to fix this?

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar possibly 1991?

Oh crap :(

Rather than try for a repair, I'd look at buying one of the later model mech hangers and find a friendly local machinist with a milling machine to make it fit. I'm not convinced you'd get any long-term strength from any repair you tried to make to that...

(It's what I considered doing when I bent the hanger on my old alloy bike, but it got stolen before I had the chance)

Sounds like a plan, Hope I can get this fixed :(

She's going into the garage now as can't face looking at it.

Re:

I cracked my Manitou FS and alot of folks have recommended Danson67
as a top guy for welding Aluminium

Still to fcuked off to be able to strip her down at present and send her off for surgery :(

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar possibly 1991?

Share your pain, I saw your post re the cracked head tube. I'm thinking maybe it's too thin to save what with there being a thread insert already but I'll give him a shout. Thanks buddy :)

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar possibly 1991?

Dan'll do it but its actually easier to modify it to take a replaceable hanger.

Re: Newest purchase GT Zaskar possibly 1991?

I phoned Argos and they said they'd modify the hanger to take a stainless steel replacement that bolts to the dropout and uses the skewer also. It'll sit proud but sounds less scary than machining it to take a flush type hanger.
