What do you hate seeing on a gorgeous retro bike?

I guess what some people consider a gorgeous bike is rather subjective. For example risers with bar ends are normally teamed with equally questionable choices more about function rather than anything remotely gorgeous and thus it’s not really relevant to the discussion in my opinion...

What's the best way to preserve tires?

I've heard of people wrapping them in plastic food wrap with lots of success. Maybe that's worth a try?

Why did amberwalls stop appearing on bikes?

Looking through some old photos friends of mine had some black walls in 1987. No idea what they were other than likely to be cheap but definitely black.

It's cool I know what you are getting at, I simply think that saying its built as the owner wanted BiTD is too loose as the time scale of the components is too broad. For example its an 80s frame which was obtained by the current owner in early 90s. The disc was added in 94 and would...

    Mine please

With a parts spread over at least a 9 year period yes it definitely suggests a rider with upgrades over the years, but I think saying built as is back in the day is a bit nonsensical as the current build doesn't reflect anything other than the last changes with parts newer than what people...

By period do you mean most of the 90s??

    Mine please

Maybe if you'd written some details of the bike explaining the current build rather than a one liner with no picture you'd get more constructive conversation. With respect to the bike itself there are some interesting details (of which you make no mention) but without a back story it just looks...

    Aargh! Chainring touching the chainstay!

Agree its a chainline issue, but given its been pointed out previously and people still won't listen to the advice I wouldn't bother telling them again...

    posting abroad - ridiculous prices!

Just a quick question for you. Did you let all the air out of the fork so it can be packed and sent compressed (ie shorter)?? This is a very simple way to make sending of suspension forks cheaper. Similarly if you have a fork with a bolted crown, unbolt it and reduce the packed size that way.

spares, we all have more than we need, what have you got?

If they are simply waiting for the right frame to hang off then I wouldn't call them spares. Although I do have a number of spare bikes... ;)

Disc brake (history of them ?)

I's say it didn't catch on for a few reasons: Built for touring bikes and thus not widely seen. I doubt many (or any) of the orignial Repack riders had seen a set of these otherwise they would have been trail tested. The stories around the adopting of deraileurs would support this (CK can...
