When did Stumpjumper go from steel to ali?

So, if we assume the pre 98 steel bikes are the ones to have, how were the early i.e. 2000MY ali bikes regarded? Can't find much in the way of period reviews. Or better still, anybody on here with a similar aged ali stumpy? What's it like?

When did Stumpjumper go from steel to ali?

So a 2000 (M4 I think) Stumpy is nothing to get too excited about in Spec' terms? What do you think one would be worth complete in good, serviced condition, ballpark? Cheers

When did Stumpjumper go from steel to ali?

...and what are the 2001/2002 ali bikes like? Are they considered a 'classic' (in design/performance terms like the '90's Explosif), or just another fairly light ali HT?

    V Brakes on a 1991 Cinder Cone

Hi again, yup total poo poo re not fitting v's to a '91... I've had mine on for a few years now and had no probs at all. In fact, seeing as most of my local road rides involve steep hills (you'll know what I mean by this...!!!) and one in paticular involves grabbing loads of front and rear to...

    Kona Impact Headset question

Yup, it was certainly tight after the last service, so must have just loosened off as things bedded down again. Note to self - check, clean & re-grease more regularly in future (well at least every 5 years...) What amazed me is that even after only the second clean-up / re-grease the...

1991 Kona Cinder Cone (Black) Rebuild or Restore?!?!?!?!?

Hi, nice CC, and in black too! Mine is a black '91 as well, and I've had it from new. Never really had to consider whether / how to fully restore it as give or take the odd month here and there, it's been in regular service for almost 20 years now, initially as my only MTB, and then as a...

    Kona Impact Headset question

"You can just hand-tighten the ring, as tight as it will go without making the bearings run rough when you turn the fork. Then lock it in that position with the Allen bolt." Yup, you were right, got about a sixth of a turn out of it  Seems OK now... and saves me the cost of a new...

    Kona Impact Headset question

Really, I heard it was a flogging offence... And I did grease it up when I replaced the stem last year, just that I've forgoten how the f**king thing went back together again... too much sauce on a hot day IIRC, suppose it's even possible I didn't tighten it up properly then...

    Kona Impact Headset question

Excuse the slightly daft question but when you say tighten it, do you mean the allen key set into the knurled ring at the top of the headtube? I've already tried that and its tight, as is the bolt in the top of the quill stem. Where else should I be checking?

    Kona Impact Headset question

I have a '91 Cinder Cone, and I've started to notice some slight play when rocking the bars with the front brake on. Now I think I'm right in saying this is likely to be headset related, so, firstly what is the likely problem? By that I mean what part of the headset is the likely culprit -...

Any Tomac H/T's out there - Buckshot/Taos/Cortez etc???

Never even seen a Talon, or read anything about it, guess that makes the ali H/T's look almost popular...

Any Tomac H/T's out there - Buckshot/Taos/Cortez etc???

Just wondering as I rarely see these bikes mentioned on here. I know they weren't exactly popular even in their day (at least this side of the pond), but after dragging the old Buckshot Pro up to Haldon to attack the Ridge Trail, I was reminded how bloody good these frames are...well, at least...

2010 Cotic Soul .... Yet another orange one

Am I right in saying Cotic don't do a v-brake compatible frame? Love the look of that build, but as I'm not only a thumbie luddite but also a v-brake luddite, I'd need those bosses...

Correct Bottom Bracket for a 1991 Cinder Cone???

OK, that all makes a lot more sense now - cheers  Hadn't thought about just replacing bearings, are they loose or in a cage in these Suntour BB's? Re taking the BB out for inspection, it's probably the only job that I've yet to tackle on the bike (mainly down to not needing to), so...

Correct Bottom Bracket for a 1991 Cinder Cone???

Hi, does anyone know what would be a suitable replacement BB for a 1991 Kona Cinder Cone? It's still running the original Suntour LTD with greasealer, but at almost 20 years old I feel it's probably going to need replacing before too long. I've kept it well greased and it seems OK at the...

    Who rides in Haldon?

There were a few natural trails around Haldon that were fully detailed in the exmtb.co.uk site, so I just bookmarked them...now the site is no more and I'll be bu**ered if I can find any reference to the rides now on the embc.co.uk site. Never mind, theres bound to be a fair few people who ride...

'91 Kona Cinder Cone - rolling resto

Thought i'd post some pics of my trusty old '91 Cinder Cone. Started a rolling refurb about four months ago, as opposed to a full strip down and rebuild, as this is still my every day bike. I've admired many of the beautiful builds on this site, and one day perhaps she'll get the full works...

    Renovated P2's with decals...& pics!!!

Well finally got round to getting the crusty old P2's blasted & powder coated (great job by First Choice Finishes in Exeter), and just applied the correct decals too (ditto by Gil). Here are a couple of before & after shots...just make the frame look a little ropey now! Well I bought her new...
