V Brakes on a 1991 Cinder Cone

Would anyone recommend fitting v-brakes to a 91 cinder cone. I was considering this, but my local bike shop owner advised against as he said the force might flex the frame as this bike wasn't designed to take the force from v brakes.

Any thoughts?

Yep. He's talking jibber jabber.

Difficult bit will be sorting the cable out because of the dog collar. You can either run a continual outer which works but is messy or bolt on a cable stop on the top tube. I used a plastic cable guide wedged in the dog collar on mine to allow the final run of outer and keep everything neat

Seat stays may flex a little, even with cantis (hence Kona fitted boosters to the 92 range), but it isn't that much of an issue and I don't think designers starting fitting heavier seat stays when Vs came out. Lets face it, the force going into the brake is all coming from one finger of your left hand, so it can't be all that much.

Most bikes have a cross piece between the rear stays just above the wheel, where you would attach mudguards or a caliper brake, which should prevent too much flex.

I replaced the cantilever brakes on my 1990 Marin with V brakes with no problems whatsoever and I find them quite an improvement and much easier to adjust.

He sounds like a ninny! has he ever heard of brake boosters? ;)

Hi again, yup total poo poo re not fitting v's to a '91... I've had mine on for a few years now and had no probs at all. In fact, seeing as most of my local road rides involve steep hills (you'll know what I mean by this...!!!) and one in paticular involves grabbing loads of front and rear to haul me down from 40+mph (bit daft I know but quite an adrenaline rush), I'd say they and the frame were well up to the job.

What drivel!
I run Maguras on a 1990 Marin. The stays flex all over the place. The brakes still work and after 11 years the frame seems no worse off either.
