Wrist watch and timepiece discussion thread

Thanks for having a go at explaining it to me Dom.. i'm not really down with the ostentatious car vibe either, i drive an old 240 wagon šŸ˜Š i agree there are some enviable skills in making swanky watches, but it's the skills i admire rather than folks ability to splurge Ā£Ā£Ā£'s,
anywho...my contribution, i haven't taken this off since 1996, it's never lost time but hey.. i don't need to be anywhere.. at least not to the nearest second.

The crazy thing is that most people would recognise your Tag as being a posh watch. Show them a Patek, AP or a Richard Mille and they probably would think a Tag is more expensive.

Watch nerds donā€™t tend to be the sort to approach people and point out their watch so youā€™d probably never even know if itā€™s noticed as general public donā€™t care and watch people are shy usually. Iā€™ve had one person notice a watch I was wearing in 5 years of owning it.

If you like engineering and craftsman ship watch a few videos of high end watches being built, serviced or repaired. Itā€™s really mind blowing stuff but certainly not worth the prices they charge for the actual watches.

If the money spent gave me joy, i could understand it, for instance, I get a lot more joy from riding bikes than owning bikes whereas i don't get joy from knowing what time it is.

Riding time thatā€™s what time it is ā€¦..

No watch enthusiast here, but I'd like to be as they take up less room than bikes!
My daily watch for the last 15years or so has been a Rolex Non-Date Submariner which I bought 2nd hand for less than a 3rd of what a new one costs today.
It bugs me every time I wear it that it doesn't have the date on it! šŸ¤£

Recently bought an Apple Watch SE, and I just don't get the point of it - but it does have the date on, and doubles as a bedside clock at night.

My '90s Timex Ironman needs a new battery.
My Animal W001 needs a strap.

I have a 'super fake' Chopard Mille Miglia which I bought a long time ago for about Ā£90 just to see how good/bad it was, and was pleasantly surprised how good it looks at a glance. It has fooled several of my watch aficionado friends, but what they don't know is that the date goes all the way up to 39...:LOL::LOL:

Always wanted an Omega Speedmaster (which again doesn't have the date on...) and recently got interested in the new Swatch + Omega Moonswatch collection which seem like nice things to have for Ā£200, but as they are available in store only at the moment I won't be making trips to London to get one.

Had this since 1996 its in reasonable condition considering I wore it every single day for 25 years. Mind you, itā€™s the chronological equivalent of Triggers broom, the amount Iā€™ve spent having it serviced and repaired over the years would comfortably have seen me wearing a nice Monaco.

its since been retired for occasional wear by a couple of Seikoā€™s, and a couple of weeks I managed to finally get my hands on a ā€™Batmanā€™. EFCF7458-6EB6-4960-9337-A38038EA46EF.jpeg

My father bought himself his first ā€˜niceā€™ watch in the ā€˜70ā€™s when I was born and wore it every day. But about 20 years ago it was damaged in an accident and relegated to the back of a drawer, thought to be irreparably goosed. I dug it out last year and had it restoredā€¦ the watchmaker managed to locate the parts to fix the mechanical alarm complication, and I even found a NOS Seiko bracelet for it, which I never thought possible due to the odd caselug design.

Gave it back to my dad for Fatherā€™s Day last year, and he hasnā€™t taken it off since.

Iā€™m a big fan of non date watches. I like the symmetry they have compared to the date versions. My 2 non date watches here below.

Iā€™ll definitely have a moonswatch once the hype has died down a bit. They look great but apparently feel cheap (which they are). Iā€™ve almost bought a moonwatch or FOIS Ona few occasions but neve gone through with it. They just seem to depreciate so fast it may even be better to find a used one at some point.

I actually had a super fake Hulk a few years ago to see if I could live with the green before buying one. Thought it was a good way to try without spending loads not to like the green. Once Iā€™d decided they had gone crazy so no Hope now.

Jeez - would you look at the size of some of those components!:oops:
And I can't even reassemble an STI unit correctly šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø
Batman is nice - I wish I'd gotten a GMT instead of the Sub.
You could always swap? Rolex supply / demand issues mean your Submariner if in decent condition is still worth comfortably more than you paid for it, and indeed more than a brand new one costs from Rolex, assuming you can convince a dealer to sell you one. You may be able to sell it and buy a used GMT with no additional outlay.

Yes good point.
Mine is well overdue a service and clean-up - and that's something I've been meaning to do for a long time, as the likely bill has always put me off, but the longer I leave it the more it will cost. I'll look in to it.
