would you buy a bike with a scratched out serial number?

Thoughful discussions. Much appreciated. I'm 99.99% sure the seller is legit---it'd just be too damn odd for him to set up this elaborate ruse to sell me a bike. That said, I think I'm still gonna pass. The price is really good, but it's just not worth the hassle. If I wanted to just keep the frame and ride it, it'd be perfect. But since that's not the case, re-selling the frame is gonna be more troubles than it's worth. Thanks for all the discussion, I appreciate it.

No. I can see no legitimate reason to scrub out a serial number. It screams 'nicked' to me. The guy selling it may be quite far down the chain of 'owners' since it was stolen, but i would still feel like i was condoning bike theft.
Just my opinion.
