Wot happened to fat bikes

Fat bikes join Octalink, pressed-in BBs, rapid-rise mechs etc in the fads dumpster.

It was another attempt by the bike industry to give the wheel another spin, along with more wheel sizes, 1x gears etc. It's all intended to drive the replacement cycle with some hot unmissable new thing.

Going the other way they sort-of made it stick with Gravel Bikes. But even there you now see articles the like of 'are 50mm tyres better than 40mm?'
Saw an article yesterday for "gravel specific diet" 😴

Fat bikes are alive and well in my garage. So much so that I got rid of a lot of normal bikes to fund them.

X2 full on carbon ( Salsa and Sonder)
X2 steel Surly
One converted to e with a Bafang mid drive. That one is a Big Fat Dummy cargo bike so deserves the motor. I haul some serious loads with it!

I don't always run fat tyres, I have 29er+ wheel sets with skinny 3" tyres, and a set with 2 .8/2.6 but mostly I ride fat. In winter I use 4.8 or 5" studded as conditions dictate.

Why? It is just great fun! I've done the NPS racing thing, and the weight-weenie thing. Now I ride mellow (comparatively) and enjoy the benefits of fat. I have no plans to go backwards to standard bikes. :)

For me, this is what has happened to Fatbikes, the evil Fat-E-bike!!!

Living in West London and the crazy rise of “last mile” delivery (loads of little oikes on illegal e-bikes delivering to lazy bastards who are busy binge watching shite on Netflix) means there’s plenty of FAT versions around. This one is in the bike park in work. This is an old photo as the owner has had his battery nicked and he can’t afford to replace it, so he’s riding that thing unassisted! Rather him than me!!!

God I hate those 20” foldable fat e bikes. It seems some guy went and smashed all the years trends into one thing.

Those are very popular in Italy though, I didn’t go a minute without seeing one. They’re also popular with the deliveroooooooo folk.
