Wippermann Chains

have to say i'm not a fan, bought one a few years ago, the stainless version for a 9 speed xtr XC bike, on the recommendation of the rep when i was still in the trade, rode it 5 times to work, 8 miles each way, on the 5th day it snapped, outer plates had died, put in a power link, got to work, checked it again, found about 5 or 6 more cracks in the outer plates, put a quality sram back on after that.

overall i prefer sram chains to other brands, don't like the joining pin hassle of shimano, my second choice would be a quality KMC.

Hmmmm, sounds bad. All I can say us I've had 4 wipperman chains on a few bikes over the last few years and they have all worked well and worn out at a reasonable rate. The only thing I'm not that keen on with them is their connecting link - it seems too bulky.

I've only ever snapped two chains (both in cross races so perhaps not a great measure) and they were both SRAM.

On balance sounds like kmc is your best bet... Or maybe use shimano chains with a kmc connecting link. That's what I do now.

stainless steel chain? I though stainless would be more brittle.

if you want different, check out kmc/ybn and for coloured chains.
