Why? Just why?

Thought I'd start a thread after coming across this. Why would someone do this? What's the point?

Feel free to post other examples of weird, pointless stuff and bodges you've inherited or come across during your bike building journeys.

In this example, what's the point? Benefit? Want to add needless weight with no added benefit. Here's how.

There's also this. A huge bit of threaded metal used to replace a nut. Why goddamit, why?

There will be a reason. It might not make any sense to others, but.... Perhaps someone had a bad experience with a valve stem ripping off, or the aesthetics didn't feel right with only one locking nut.

People are bloody weird.

Wheel balancing obviously! 😂

Confession time:
I was setting up gears for a friend of the better half yesterday (misaligned FD was worst culprit). When spinning up the back wheel in the stand noticed how out of balance the back wheel was (tyre seated correctly). I had a fiddle with the redundant Speedo magnet (no Speedo fitted) and enjoyed a couple of minutes finding the most effective spoke and then radius and managed to achieve both a balanced wheel and mind! 🥸

Some people struggle to throw things away...
And we can all accumulate presta valve collars.

We keep ours in a little drawer on the upstairs work bench. it holds a couple of hundred.
He (surely) keeps his on the Presta valve stem.

Next time he will need a long valve tube😉

I didn’t have any shift cable ferrules left so I used brake ferrules and wrapped the shift housing in hockey tape so it fit more snuggly in the ferrules

That makes sense. A slight bodge, but serves a purpose and arguably does as good a job as the right ferrule.

Looking for more left field weird and absurd entries.
