Why is this so difficult!?

I'm trying to get a 'hack' road bike to get me to the gym and back. Something functional with working gears/breaks and no wobbly bearings but nothing too flashy because it's going to be locked up, unattended.

I used to be able to take a pick from our local skip but they 'aren't allowed to do this any more blah blah health & safety'....or you could always pick something up out the paper for £50 that would do....but nothing. Even on eBay the relics go for way over the odds...and most the stuff for sale on the forums is beyond what I need.

Why is this so difficult - where else can I search?

There are loads out there - try a local bike jumble, car boot sale or Gumtree maybe?

I feel the same way.
Most of the people asking for the price of an arm and a leg.
I've been looking for a reasonable road bike for a reasonable price but so far I've spend the whole summer looking and still have no luck.
I think the term "Vintage" is giving a lot of the people the wrong ideas that they can raise the price just in the name of "Vintage".

you can get something ridable on ebay for less than £50, my rather nice (in my eyes) Kalkhoff set me back £31

My hack!

I wanted exactly the same and the only thing i needed was a frame so I asked my LBS who had a good root around and found me a handmade 531 frame unpainted for ........... £50!

Granted it was made for skinny 26" wheels, but its brill!
