Why Don't I like the 'good' bikes?

And I would like to think that no-one's gonna look down their nose at that person with the Asda bike and say, don't waste your time 'cos it's shit.

But maybe that's just wishful thinking.

If you want to rebuild something, no-one is gonna try to stop you

But a Raleigh Commando is of it's time, no worse than a Chopper or Grifter and a damn sight rarer

Not quite the same as what I'm talking about

- But gald you mentioned it as it helps frame my angle in this discussion

I'm talking about bikes that calim to be MTBs and are built with similar technologies and construction methods to a '70s leisure bike in the late '80s and even '90s!

And I'm saying folks should be open to critical observation and not chuck the toys out of the pram if they see some

But those ASDA bikes? Shouldn't be on the market now as LGF has said there are consumer information forums where dire warnings and horror experiences are posted in an effort to save people from them

Next time you go to a super market/Toys R us/garden centre take a very close look at that stuff

anyway
hydorah

i enjoyed your build , and i agree with your scrap box build type idea
i have several bike built with what is lying around but i'm currently
building as i buy for the current project ,because its a high end frame

but i prefer the midrange stuff as most of my 34 bikes are dx/lx equipped
bikes

have just built a zaskar weenie bike from essentially scrap bits
the frame is in a sorry state and everything else is/was unused and in the shed , cept the bits i made (brakes ,spacers & gubbins) got a lot
more pleasure from this than most builds of a more worthy type

Yep those midrange bikes get you a long way for you money

With everyone with the dollars chasing the XTR it works out rather nicely!

I'll probably do something fancy some time

But only when an absolute bargain frame find comes to me...

Probably still only go to XT...

My build! Yeah, I had a good look around on here and saw lots of mega bucks cool stuff, so I thought I'd deliberately start out with something pocket money (but no corners cut and no compromises) and monitor everything; time/spend/tech stuff

But in doing so, have gained enormous benefit from this forum

Got the frame maker identified

Got useful info about that maker

I posted questions about my intended approach to rebuilding the forks

Again I got useful info

In this case I was initially going to convert the forks from elastomers to springs or just rigidise them

To the horror of all who read those plans!

Did I freak out and get defensive? No I listened and I learned and I got a spot on result from it

For me that is what this forum is all about

And it's my angle in this debate

Listen and learn, do better projects, there's a wealth of expertise on here and it is freely shared in an open, honest and friendly way

Don't expect everyone to coo over a bike that's lethal, just 'cos it's old!
