Whitening old brake lever hoods

I have some good condition original white hoods, but when i put new white bar tape on they looks very grubby..

Has anyone found a way of cleaning them to make them white again? I've tried soap and water but it only gets them so clean.

Bleach??

shampoo and a toothbrush always worked for me

risk it at your own peril, but turps substitute on a cloth brings up coloured cork tape like new. Not sure how it would react to rubber, and poss old rubber at that??

Could you post the results (hoods, not tiger tears)? I have a pair of Shimano 600 Ultegra white hoods that I tried to clean with neat washing up liquid, but they still look grubby...
