Which road tyre?

i'm in a similar situation myself and am running conti double fighter2's at some ungodly pressure that an mtb should never see.

they run well on the road, have the side tread to grip slightly on looser stuff, not bad on fallen leaves etc but you may as well try and scale k2 on a unicycle rather than try and go up a wet grass hill!

they work fine for me as a commuter tyre but don't believe the blurb saying they are a good all rounder for towpath / bridalpath type cycling too.

Tioga City Slicker in 26x1.50 or 26x1.95" if you want something period-correct.
They have been making these since the late 80s, but the design has recently changed. Available in blackwall or skinwall

Schwalbe also has a big range of road tyres in all shapes and sizes, so you might want to google for them too.

Looks very similar to the Schwalbe City Jet... I've been running these for over a year now, almost daily, and no punctures, can't recommend them enough!

As a bonus, when I bought mine, amberwalls were a pound cheaper than blackwalls :)

Same here - been running them on my Prezzer without any punctures so far, very fast tyre when pumped up nice 'n hard, plus you can get them in the all important amberwall :D

Another vote for Schwalbe City Jet tyres here :)
I looked around for a road tyre and ended up getting the City Jets, 6 months and no punctures despite taking a regular shortcut along a gravel track and through some woods  On the road they roll nice and fast and have at least some tread on them to disperse water.

For the OP I think they would be ideal, they will easily handle unkept roads, and leaves are slippy as hell no matter what tyres you use (but fortunately they'll only be around for another month or two).

PS: I find my City Jets quite easy to take on/off the Mavic D521 rims I use and I do this regularly to change between knobblies and slicks, other narrower rims may be more tricky?

Thanks for all of your replies everyone, looks like the city jets are very popular. Plus the amberwalls look pretty cool :)

Have had 1.95 City Jets on one of my Cinder Cones for some years now - no complaints and seem to recall they were not expensive at all :D

Good no nonsense tyre imho :D

city jets are great if you dont mind wrestling them on and off the rims with 11 tyre levers.

I know that feeling, I took a set off last night and my thumbs still hurt.

And I can't even face trying to put them on something again, I think I might sell them.

Bloody good once they're on though.

I've tried a few of the slicks around and find they seem to have quite a bit of rolling resistance which can sometimes leave a good bike feeling like its made of concrete.

This may sound odd but Ritchey Omega/ Alpha tyres are very good road tyres.

Their tread is cut into the tyre (like a car tyre) rather than external knobblies like a Racing Ralph or similar.

Its hard to describe exactly but the profile of the tread is perfectly smooth so with about 50 psi, roads are smooth and comfortable so you can cycle to wherever for work, then go straight off-road at the weekend.

Works for me anyway.

I also used to run Ritchey Speedmax but they wore very quickly

Slicks are also bloody heavy.

I've got an old set of Specialized Crossroads that are fairly worn in the middle so are smooth on the straight ahead but got enough grip for light off road duties. Just keep the pressure up nice and high.
