apparently as soon as one signs on unemployment benefit, they become known to MI5 presumably

Speculation without sources is always dubious.

Do you have anything to back this assertion up?

I don't think we need have any doubt that MI5 and any other government agency that wanted it has access to a DB of all claimants, and just about anyone else if they wished.

The local benefit offices are obliged to regularly make available a current DB showing the status of all claimants. This is used for such things as data matching against the local councils list of Council Tax, Housing Benefit and voter registration DB's in search of discrepancies.

"DATA MATCHING
31. Data matching is the technique of comparing different databases so as to identify common features or trends in the data. Matching unemployment benefit claimants against employed persons may, for instance, be a way of identifying potentially fraudulent claimants for further investigation."

So the data is there and available. It doesn't prove that MI5 have access of course but come on.....

Its usefulness to them (or this thread) is another matter. :)

Sorry to be ignorant/naive but isn't there something called the data protection act?

(I've been out of the country for a while)

An urban myth perhaps, but I heard about it long ago, but why not, for it is known that those who do not occupy their minds with work, debts and wotnot have time to think and think about the actions that have caused them to be where they are now.

Believe me from what I know of myself and those like me, if I was security aware as regards the protection of the elite, I would be very interested in what those with time on their hands were thinking and doing as the greatest fear I believe this country has, is degradation from within, not an external aggressor who makes themselves known, for we have a military that can counter that threat.

But as we speak on here, who knows who or what is watching in, and via ip address, it is easy to find a perpetrator behind an anonymous screen name.

Data protection only exists for those that obey the law, if one is above the law in the interests of national security, the data protection act contains clauses to allow interested parties access.

But what constitutes a threat to the nation, anything if it comes from the right inquirers.
