When will a Y2K bike be

That about sums it up for me

Although I do like Converse baseball boots but wouldn't wear them

It's all relative . A chap who has been riding since 1980 wouldn't necessarily think a 1995 bike was old but a snotty oik who first saw a good bike in 2000 would think a 1999 was retro now .

If you think your late 90s bike is retro , cool . Just don't expect everyone to agree .

Until the government starts issuing tax breaks for bikes before a certain age don't worry about it .

Organisers of the Brighton Big dog set a limit of 1995 to their 'retro' race class.

OWMTB organisers set a limit of 1996.

The 'Retrobike illuminati' have a hand in both these events so the clues are there.

If your bike was built after 1996, you can't race it in either of the two leading 'retro' races in the UK. It ain't retro. Deal with it.

Now, do we scrap posts pertaining to any bike or component made after 1996 as well as banning 'modern' classifieds or shall we all just accept that retro means different things to different people, we're all just cyclists, and have fun appreciating some fantastic machinery, new(ish) or old.

I get that it isn't now. . . but what about in 10, 15 or 20 years time??
Can you see the Retro illuminati still banning post '96 bikes in 2025??

I know. . . who cares. . . it doesn't really matter but I was just curious ;)

Isn't there a difference in "looking" retro and "being" retro?

The old bike is "retro" the new bike looks "retro".

That's how i would define it anyhow.

Maybe we have to remember though that times are moving fast and technology/trends are forever shifting with every year that passes.. so things are becoming retro all the time.
No matter whether it was made in the late 90's or the early/mid 2000's it doesn't matter. Retro defines a specific time and how things were. So whether it was a look or a certain style, or something that defined that time it will be retro in some way, especially if it has been superseded by the next and is no longer available or in a different form to what it once was. We shouldn't dismiss something because it isn't necessarily old as age doesn't clearly define it.

God, this again!

Retro - Involving, relating to, or reminiscent of things past; retrospective

Note the involving and relating to. Both words mean that the item that is retro can be old also, hence:

is both old and retro, the new bike is just retro.

A potential origin of the word retro is retrospective -

retrospective
1. Looking back on, contemplating, or directed to the past.
2. Looking or directed backward.
3. Applying to or influencing the past; retroactive.
4. Of, relating to, or being a retrospective

so lets say an artist has a retrospective art display, does it mean he goes off and paints all his old paintings again, or is it a collection of his old works? I know what I think.

So lets forget this tired bmw mini/mini cooper definition that gets shoved around on STW and remember that language is what we make of it.

Well said Pete, although I must disagree with you on one point. Surely nobody really likes Sex in the City, not even hipsters.

At the end of the day my main reasons for chosing retrobike were
a)I thought (and still think) the name retrobike was quite a good one.
b)The term was and still is commonly used to refer to older bikes.

As for the motorbikes I did of course see the point the poster was trying to make. However I was more unclear as to why the poster had chosen to make the point with motorbikes given this is a cycling site.

You're right John, it was a heat of the moment mistake. When ever I see an advert for that show it reminds me of a Family Guy episode where Brian the dog watches an episode - 'so its a show about 3 hookers and their Mom?'. Maybe I should have said 'Ugly Betty' or 'Will and Grace'?
