I've got a bike that touched down from the US on Friday and is still listed on the USPS website as being 'with UK customs'. Does this timescale mean i'm going to get stung?? If so, do you pay 17.5% of the listed amount?

Good chance I'm afraid. How much seems to be a finger in the air calculation.

Well, not really - you pay the import duty applicable to the item (higher rate for a complete bike than for frames, components - you can get more details of categories from C&E), a handling charge and then VAT on all of this (including shipping charges).
I think components are charged at something like 4.7% but a complete bike is more than this - there are even different categories for painted/unpainted, aluminium/steel frames etc.....

All I can say is...my cranks imported from the States at $190 posted attracted a surcharge of £23ish...the PO sticker just said it was a VAT charge :?

how much did the seller put on the label as value?? if it was less than about $50 then you wouldnt have got charged.

Not entirely sure how it all works, but in my experience it is around 30-35% on the sale price when buying from shops new. Not sure how this is accounted for on older items like a retro frame. It can't be done on the cost quoted by the sender, because if they are nice they could under value the package for you. Although by doing this they loose their insurance on the package.

I was told in the past that goods under £30 in value are allowed in with no duty. Not sure if this is correct.

I too have had stuff make it through tax free, I think its just luck.
So that in mind with the current exchange rate being very roughly 2:1
If you add the 17.5% plus the customs administration charge and be prepared to pay (if your unlucky) a figure around 35% of sale. If you lucky it will sneak through. If your unluck you could still save upto 15-20% on the Uk price of lots of things. Assuming you can find them half price in the US, which you often can.

I would love to know how to work this out as many nice parts are still available NOS in the US and the shipping is a pain.
Just need a friendly C&E representative to explain it all to us. Do these exist or are they like friendly Traffic Wardens.

It's coming as two boxes, and I think he put each one as about $200 but labelled it as a gift. The first box is now through customs, so we should see in the next couple of days!

If its more than $65 then you can be taxed on the whole thing ($65 AFAIK is the limit on 'gifts')

you should think yourselves lucky. when i was living in brazil there was 60% tax on everything imported by post!!
