When does NOS stop being NOS?

Re:

Think about it like a toothbrush. If it’s used it’s used and therefore not new.

We get this a lot in the motor trade by people saying a car is new when it’s 3 months old and 2000 miles etc. It’s only new once

If it’s used in any way it’s not new. That included fitting to a bike of its a part.

I'll try to show you how I consider it non NOS. And how it helps me organise things.
A NOS - new old stock, for me it's a product that was never sold and never used, back in the days and it's now on the market.
Have to be more then 20 years to be considered vintage, it's how I organise my products or web search...
When a NOS part it's assembled on a bike, for display, showoff or ride it it's no longer NOS, (for me) it's mint/pristine/super condition, or how the seller describes it and how pictures show the real thing.
NOS bikes, it's nice if they are NIB, new in box, to avoid storage scratch or damages. Store display, still NOS. When ridden, non NOS. When you buy a bike and never ridden, non NOS.
This can be very relative to everyone but it's how I try to do it.
The project bike can also be importante and will define how rigorous you will be to evaluate the NOS or non NOS part.
NOS parts, NIB parts are more and more rare.
I know that the seller will describe it NOS because was never used, but I know that I'll find a micro-scratch and I'll stock it in the mint condition parts... =)
Hope it helps.
Ricardo.

Yep, this for me. NOS means it's never been fitted, never been used and is the same condition as it left the factory.

Re:

I would list that toothbrush as New (Other). Sure, no one will know.

Right. Decision made. As of this morning my frameset was NOS. Now it’s part built.. and hence not. Just need to get round to breaking the seal on these..

Any individual parts eventually taken off to be sold would be "New - mounted, but not ridden" or "New take off".

Or a dozen other new descriptions. 'New maybe' or 'new this week' or how about " Was new when opened the box and fitted it to my bike for a 10 mile ride, but then taken straight off and put back in the box"

I suspect those claiming other have shiny used parts they want to sell at a premium.

Re:

Everything was nos once. Makes me cringe when people list things as nos when fitted. Well, dur. So what. Not nos now.

Re:

Is there no such thing as a N.O.S. complete bike?

I have seen both a Klein Attitude and a Kona Hot advertised as New Old Stock, because allegedly they had not been ridden. All the components however have been fitted to a frame, so none of it is new and unused, not even the frame.

Re:

How can someone be sure a bike hasn’t been ridden?

Back in 90s one person working in a bike shop might have ridden it across the shop to where it was going on display for example.
