When did Stumpjumper go from steel to ali?

...and what are the 2001/2002 ali bikes like? Are they considered a 'classic' (in design/performance terms like the '90's Explosif), or just another fairly light ali HT?

Think there was a transition period where both were available...somewhere around late 90's 95/96...someone will know exactly. Stumpjumper production finish in the USA with the 2000 model. Nothing wrong with the modern stuff, but it ain't classic...indeed some will say steel Stumpjumpers are the only classics...but I don't agree.
96/97 M2 Stumpjumers are the best in my humble.

So a 2000 (M4 I think) Stumpy is nothing to get too excited about in Spec' terms? What do you think one would be worth complete in good, serviced condition, ballpark? Cheers

Think the first M2's were in 1992/3 ish. Steel and alu were done side by side for a godo few years after that.

First M2's came out in 1991.
I think the last steel Stumpys were around about 1996.

The steels carried on til 1998, using Ritchey Nitanium tubing. The only alloy - not metal matrix was 96 i think, they only made it for one year

So, if we assume the pre 98 steel bikes are the ones to have, how were the early i.e. 2000MY ali bikes regarded? Can't find much in the way of period reviews. Or better still, anybody on here with a similar aged ali stumpy? What's it like?

Haven't a clue I'm afraid...

Haven't decided if I'll make the trek over to view it yet... was hoping for a little more info from people here before handing over a load more fuel duty to our new chancellor...

I have a steel stumpy from 96/97 and it isn't badged up as Nitanium tubing but the decals say Direct Drive Deluxe, custom butted Cro-mo tubing and it was made in Taiwan.
